    ELKINS, WV (CNN) - A quiet neighborhood in West Virginia turned into a deadly shooting gallery Wednesday when a U.S. marshal was shot and killed.

    A team of marshals and
    West Virginia State Police officers were serving a search warrant at a home in Elkins, WV, but when they when entered the suspect's house, investigators said Charles Smith opened fire.

    Smith was killed by officers, but not before shooting three marshals. Derek Hotsinpiller, who had only been with the service for about a year, was killed.

    "It was a terrible way to wake up, and I feel horrible, you know, for the family," said Logan Biller, a resident in the neighborhood. "I heard like six or seven rapid fire gunshots."

    Investigators had been looking for Smith for about a year. He had been indicted for crack cocaine in 2006, and they knew he had an illegal gun.

    The last U.S. marshal to die from gunfire was killed in Las Vegas 2010.

    I remember when Noah died in 1998. Hit me pretty hard. Sam was torn up too.
