  1. Maybe someone can help.. I want to take a widely known/shared photo of Babe Ruth's farewell speech, alter it some, and use it as a background for my website. I know that the alter job won't affect the legality of using it, I'm just not sure if someone owns the copyright. Anyone with experience doing this?
  2. If it's been in publication longer than 25 years, I believe it's considered to be in the public domain and no longer protected.
  3. I just googled it and I got this:

"As a general rule, for works created after January 1, 1978, copyright protection lasts for the life of the author plus an additional 70 years. For an anonymous work, a pseudonymous work, or a work made for hire, the copyright endures for a term of 95 years from the year of its first publication or a term of 120 years from the year of its creation"

    More info at copyright.gov
  4. Just take a picture of the picture and use that. Shouldn't be a prob
  5. Just alter it, change the chroma, zoom it alittle, change the field etc., send it to me if you can't
  6. unless you are making a profit off the image the worst they can do is send you a letter telling you to take it down.
  7. agree with bossman.

no chance it ends up costing you financially if it's a splash page or whatever.

I'd do it and not worry much unless I got a notice.
  8. is your website a business or just a like personal website/blog thing?
  9. Def. not EZ to build whole websites with all original art and content. I just got rid of the last of my "stolen" art on my sites. Even went as far as using a self taken picture of the detroit sky as a bg on one site. But that is just to be more pro as a website builder.

What stock art sites would you guys suggest?
  10. What programs do you guys use to build? Do you do all the coding or use something like Dreamweaver or Web expressions?
  11. I can write html in notepad but I get lazy and use Dreamweaver. I use Adobe suite. Love Fireworks. Flash is fun but never got into flash scripting. Need to get better at PHP and Java.
  12. I'm using it for a mobile street food startup. I'll be superimposing a picture of a pig into the Ruth photo. I won't be selling products on the site, but would like the altered image to be a graphic/wrap for my food truck.

Yes, Skillet will eventually be a competitor when we move into King County. I fully believe we can do it better though!
