Really interesting. I apologize if it's been posted before. What a fucked up secretive place!

You've experienced most of the places you've traveled as more a citizen than a tourist. This tour only allows you to see NK through the eyes they let you see it through. Not sure if those two sentences made any sense lol but it just seems like the opposite of the way you travel. I understand that it's the only way to probably visit the country in our lifetime but it's weird to pay a TON of money to see a country this way.
-
i like how insane they are...but the people have no idea they are
-
The one where they go to Siberia to see the NK labor camps is interesting as well. Pretty much anything Vice does is worth watching imo.

It's incredible how brainwashed they are. That museum that has all of the "gifts from presidents and governments from around the world given for greatness" just shows how absurd it is.
I feel like these tours are like those Off-Broadway shows where you participate like "Tony and Tina's Wedding." It's like a semi-scripted play that you're apart of-except they don't seem to understand that the tourists are aware at how fake it is. -
Edited By: zeppelinzoso16 Jan 21st, 2012 at 05:38 AMI wouldn't say I've seen the places as a citizen but I try to cross over as much as I can. I spend more than half my time staying in someone's home which certainly helps. I'm definitely on a different path than the standard touristOriginally Posted by tsxxx04

A tour is the only way to see N. korea which is maybe the most fascinating regime in the world. I'm not into tours. They would show you what they want you to see and it would be very controlled. Would be a great experience to see N. Korea, even as a tourist. Once the regime falls there will be nothing like it in existence. However, visiting N. Korea as soon as the regime falls or opens up a little, now that will be unfucking believable (ideally would love to see before and after) . That is the type of occasions I want to start experiencing as I progress in my travels. Think I am going to double major in poli sci and journalism to do just that (if anybody has opinions on those 2 majors in order to accomplish such a thing I'd like to hear) -
guide is old if you seeked it, but should be seen by everyone. really interesting.
10 lane empty highways are awesome, among things. empty convention halls where you are the only one having a meal is awesome, and stadium full of youth performing for just their leader, is the nuts of life. -
Holy shit...that's about all I can say after that.
Holy shit.
It's like taking a trip back to the 1800s or something. -
I wonder how the hell they got all that footage without getting into trouble.
Pun Yun Chi the pool player is pretty hot. -
I will continue to ask for my ammo after my bad dreams; juan time?
-
Bunch of people I know have done the overnight tours there (I think they are closed now due to people going off the "path" and being shot), and it's a lot like what that guy was saying. Pretty much everything they show you is very orchestrated, and they show you exactly what they want you to see. I never really wanted to do it. I didn't think it was right to pay their country $200-$300 that goes to who knows what. The only "funny" thing I was told was at curfew, like is like 8 or 9pm the whole city turns dark and silent...freaky...

We are all a product of this to varying degrees.
-
True. This idea kind of ties into the argument about ethnocentrism we are having in the thread about self immolation.
-
Watching this makes you realize that the human mind is so adaptable that it can be conditioned to perceive any reality as normalcy.

whats the lesser evil? living free in a country with the most crime and prisoners or a country with no press or visitors allowed except tourism. All while with the freedom of moving away but not being allowed back?
Couldve phrased that much better but whatever. you know what I mean
its late and Im... -
"most crime"? And I don't think North Koreans have any more ability to move away than people did in Soviet Russia.

While I was in China there was a story of somebody trying to defect into China by sneaking across the border. They were caught by Chinese border guards/military (not sure, maybe same anyway) and returned to N. Korea presumably to be executed. We were having a discussion on how fucked up a policy it is and that China is basically an accomplice to murder -
I read this graphic novel about North Korea last year, which was written by a guy who had to live there for a while when his job in the animation industry resulted in him working over there (since North Korean animation techs work for cheap as fuck so shit gets outsourced to there or whatever so he had to be over there to help run things or something). It basically just shows the random shit he witnessed in every day life in North Korea from his outsider's perspective.

To be honest the book wasn't as amazing as I thought it would be, like, it was limited a bit by the author's abilities/style, but, it was still definitely worth reading regardless, and of course, since it's a graphic novel, you can read through it very quickly, so even if you end up not liking it it won't waste very much of your time or anything. -
I was thinking about you B as I saw all those potentially amazingly hot beautiful brainwashed NK women in the documentary.
I wonder if it is possible to purchase a night with an NK girl if you take one of the tours? -
Not N. Korea but there are N. Korea stories on there, especially after Kim Jong Il died (huge news in China, entire funeral was on cctv, almost non stop coverage for days) but if anybody is interested in what is happening in China this website is amazing. It takes the top internet stories in China and translates them to English. Just looked and actually the Asian getting his ass kicked in Chicago in on there

interesting link from page 2. Cool part of the website is reading the comments. Keep in mind it is very liberal, not status quo Chinese
