The San Francisco 49ers have emerged as a possible destination for disgraced quarterback Michael Vick after coach Mike Singletary refused to rule out a trade with the Atlanta Falcons.
With Vick expected to be released from prison in July, the Falcons last week announced they are looking to trade the 28-year-old former face of their franchise.
Many have questioned whether any team would want to be associated with Vick, who is serving a 23-month sentence for his role in a dog-fighting ring, but that does not appear to be an issue for Singletary.
"I'm not going to say I'm open or closed," Singletary told the Santa Rosa Press Democrat when asked about Vick.
"I'd say it has to be something (general manager) Scot (McCloughan) and I talk about and feel good about one way or the other. But we have not talked about it at this point in great detail. We're trying to focus on what we have."
The 49ers have a question mark at quarterback after last season dropping Alex Smith in favour of Shaun Hill.
Neither player is guaranteed the starting role in 2009.
"I think right now we really need to look at the two guys we have," Singletary added. "If everything works out with Alex and he's back, we need to look at that and go as far as we can go with that.
"The whole Michael Vick thing, we have to sit down and talk about that. But for right now, we have enough on our plates."
The Falcons issued a statement on their website last week saying they wanted to trade Vick, who signed a 10-year, US dollars 130 million contract in 2004.
The NFL suspended him indefinitely without pay in August 2007, and Commissioner Roger Goodell called the dog-fighting operation "cruel and reprehensible".
The suspension came quickly after Vick pleaded guilty to the federal dog-fighting charge, admitting that he bankrolled the operation known as "Bad Newz Kennels" which was based on his property in rural Virginia.
Court papers revealed disturbing details of the operation, including the execution of under-performing dogs by electrocution, drowning, hanging and other means.
Details of the operation prompted outrage against the once-popular Vick by various animal-rights groups.
The Falcons have already ruled out a return to Atlanta for Vick, and last season replaced him with rookie Matt Ryan who impressed in his first campaign as the Falcons reached the play-offs.
Despite his legal problems, NFL teams could still be swayed by Vick's obvious athletic ability.
In six seasons with the Falcons, Vick threw for 11,505 yards and 71 touchdowns, while rushing for a further 3,859 yards and 21 scores.
Any thoughts on this?

A lot can happen between now and July
-
good deal for someone, if he stays out of trouble he can probably still make a great comeback.
-
Fuck Vick I hope to god he doesn't go to the niners
-
I actually think it would be the best fit for Vick. San Francisco is way away from the east coast press and although he is going to take serious shots from the media no matter where he lands, San Francisco would probably be a gr8 place for him. San Francisco was a dynasty for a long time and have been horrid in past 10 years and I think no matter what Vick has done if he wins that the fans will rally around him.
I seriously did not know he was getting out so soon but I will take your word on it. I am a huge dog lover but I hate when 1 person is singled out and jailed and scum like Adam Jones is getting to play though he orders people killed and gets jailed on a weekly basis.
EDIT: I feel Vick should have been in jail, I only wish he was sharing a cell with Jones and that Harrison was at minimum security prison as well. -
I like watching Vick play and would love to see him comeback.
People kill all kinds of animals everyday for 100's of reasons. Just because a lot of people have affection towards dogs does that automatically make him the worst person in history and should be cast into a pit to be stoned by the public? I don't think so but that's neither here nor there.
I'd really like to see this whole situation dissolve and have him return to the exciting play maker that he once was, whether that's in San Fran or elsewhere. -
Judge just ruled his house in Duluth (not far from here) can be sold paid 3.5 million I think
-
The dude has a million dollar body and a 10 cent brain, plus he's a morally bankrupt wanna-be gangsta and he'll bring these liabilities to any team who takes a chance and signs him.
Having said that, I see a tremendous opportunity for Vick if he happens to go to a team which features the "wildcat offense." In this offensive scheme you essentially have two quarterbacks in the backfield and the defense has no idea which QB is going to take the snap.
As a lefty, If Vick were to occupy the left QB slot where he would have the option to roll out and either run or throw moving to his left, he would create a serious problem for any defense. And if he were paired with a high-quality right-handed QB who could complete the mid-length passes and also pull the ball down and scramble and make some yards, then you'd have one of the top-scoring offensive schemes in the NFL.
However, I'd just as soon see him never get to play another down or make another dollar as a professional athlete because of the type person he is. -
wrong side of the bay imo.
-
well, it's not like sf values animals over people, and even tried (& failed? can't remember) to name owners of pets "companions" or some shit.
can't see this one happening. besides, vick sucks -
^^^ looool! this!
-
lol @ anyone with the last name vick learning his lesson...
-
lol

although im not a huge vick fan, i am also def not a fan of all the hate he gets.
-
They dealt with and loved Bonds. I am in NO WAY saying that what either of them did was ok, especially in the case of Vick, who i personally think should RIH imo, but San Fran seems to have many fans that can forgive and forget if numbers are put up.
Plus, I like him paired with Singletary. Either he will be shaped into a model QB or he will be shipped the fuck out. GL with him SF. -
I wouldn't care if he went to the 49ers and they are the only team I "root" for in football
-
Being a QB is out of the question, but, I heard he has honed his skills as a receiver while in prison.
Give it a second or so to sink in.... -
i think stafford will fall to the 49ers and there gonna scoop him up. I grew up watching vick in HS and I would hands down take stafford over vick
-
Most teams are very reluctant to sign Vick right now because they know it will be a PR nightmare.
My guess though is that some desperate team will sign him at a reduced salary somewhere in the neighborhood of 1-2 million for the year and he will have a chance to prove whether or not he can still help a team win games. I think a team like the Niners would be a perfect fit because they run a similar offensive system to what he was playing in his last couple years in Atlanta. Vick loves throwing to his TE and he would turn Vernon Davis aka The Duke into a pro bowl TE. The Niners receivers are terrible anyway so it doesn't matter that he can't throw the ball downfield with any sort of real accuracy. Singletary wants to be a smash mouth team and with Gore and Vick they could easily be amongst the league leaders in team rushing yards. Not to mention that their turnover ratio will be excellent and the Niners have a solid young defense.
For Vick to thrive though you have to let him do what he does best. Petrino was a horrible coach and he basically handcuffed Vick's playmaking ability because he tried to mold him into a pure pocket passer. Vick is no doubt the most exciting QB to ever play the game but you have to take the chains off of him and let him have some freedom within the gameplan.
Redeem yourself Vick!!!!! He said he would now it's time to see what kind of fire the man still has burning in his belly. I personally hope the dude rises back up from the ashes and starts crushing again. -
meh, he's pretty difficult to play with imo.
The Flacons O-Line and receiving corps played so bad for him, I doubt they improved as dramitically as it seemed when he left.
Guys like Roddy White, Todd Weiner, Todd McClure and Tyson Clabo were all considered busts when Vick played here. Now they are either pro bowlers or very solid players, coincidence?
Vick is impossible to block for, and makes WR's lives miserable because he throws the ball hard as shit but has shit for accuracy. -
You forget that he took a struggling Falcons team that hadn't done anything in forever and made them winners again. Under Dan Reeves he thrived because it was a completely different offensive system and Reeves gave him plenty of freedom within the offense. Vick operates very well out of the shotgun but after Reeves left they tried to install a West Coast offense which basically uses nothing but 3 and 5 step drops. Out of the shotgun Vick is able to read the field a lot better and he is able to use his legs to buy time and rollout if need be.
After Vick broke his leg they didn't want him to run as much and they tried to mold him into a pocket passer which is ridiculous. He is NOT and will NEVER be a pure pocket passer. You have to play to his strengths and run the risk of him getting hurt. If he gets hurt so be it but you can't try to make him do things that he doesn't do well. If Vick is used correctly and is able to stay injury free I guarantee you that he can still do big things in the NFL.
On another note Matt Ryan is the truth and Vicks situation was the best thing that ever coulda happened for their franchise. It turned out to be a blessing in disguise for them. -
F him. i hope no team in their right mind pays him a MILLION DOLLARS to play again. I don't care if he paid his "debt" to society, what he did is ridic and i hope he doesn't EVER get the chance to earn that money again.
-
The comedy of him playing in the middle of PETA central and protest central and gay central would well be worth the price of a reality tv show following him around 24/7. Bring it on! I bet they lose some season ticket holders for it though.
-
i don't get the "gay central" to Michael Vick connection
