  13. in b4 soy latte rant lol
  14. That's terrible :( Does the law specifically say that it's ok to bully them? That doesn't even make sense! Does anyone have the wording of the bill? It's not ok to bully anyone, ever, for any reason. Sigh. And any Christian who thinks this is ok needs to spend a little more time reading their Bible (or any other religion for that matter, I'm sure their holy book doesn't teach that it's ok to mistreat people).
  15. except during religious wars, and then it is perfectly fine to kill someone

Please stop. How many religious wars did Jesus encourage? That was not his message at all. Sigh. This will be lost on most of you, though, and I'm so tired of arguing about it.
  19. Im down for some gay bashing, whos up first? NCJ?
  20. Thank you for the daily dose of extreme righteousness, courtesy of some wingnuts styling themselves as true believers. These are the type of people who give decent Christians a bad name.

    That's one of my fantasies.
  22.

Democrats in the state legislature have fought their Republican colleagues and social conservatives such as Gary Glenn, president of the American Family Association of Michigan, who referred to anti-bullying measures as “a Trojan horse for the homosexual agenda.”

They also strongly oppose legislation that would prevent discrimination against gay individuals in the workplace, charging that such a law would endanger religious freedom. A report on the Christian Broadcasting Network outlined one such concern: “The special protections for gay and transgendered teachers will make it extremely difficult for [public school] districts that might want to remove them from the classroom.”

It's sad to watch obviously nice and kind hearted people like ECU fight the machine that is organized religion. "It's not supposed to be that way!" Sorry, but it is. It's that way. It's the reason why millions of women have to cover their heads and not drive or get jobs or vote, and why veiled bigotry and breeding grounds for hatred are accepted in every corner of this nation, and it's what has stood in the way of every ounce of social progress, and it's why entire countries are are at war with one another, and it's... I could go on and on and on.

The saddest thing about it is that I know ECU's (and people like her) intentions are good. I really do. But I've come to the belief that the passive supporter or the "religious reformer" is just as much responsible for those the actions of the religious right as those that are card carrying members. This includes many of my own family members. All of those micro-actions add up. All of that empathy -- 'well, i don't completely agree with his opinions but I understand his faith,' adds up into one gigantic macro religious tragedy and social clusterfuck.

People should be more offended. We need to get to a place where quoting an OBJECTIVELY immoral opinions (discrimination) disqualifies you from public office because people label you as a crazy person. What happens now is that people quietly approve of the person and when challenged they state some uncomfortableness with their bigotry, but....

We need more people to stand up and say that your morals aren't right just because they're from a book. And we don't need to appease you just because you're hiding behind the bullshit word faith. Faith should be a dirty fucking word now. Oh, you just believe it? WHYYYYY. Explain.

    Luckily religion is dying.

This story ruined my Friday morning and my rant is probably incoherent.

  25. Organized religion is as corrupt as any organization out there. Yep, I said it. The agenda pushed by the extreme religious right does more harm than good for their cause.

I grew up in a church. My father is a Sunday School teacher, and plays in a gospel band called the Celebration Singers. There are certain topics, such as homosexuality, which will always be taboo and create heated debates between those of different opinions. I prefer to stick to the message of love your neighbor as you love yourself. I'm not perfect, and neither is anybody I know, but the older I get the more I see how bigoted and wrong some "mainstream religious views" are.

The lawmakers who passed this legislation should be ashamed of themselves, Christian or otherwise.
  26. there's a weird tolerance of insane ideas if they are backed by a person's faith (as long as its a recognized faith). It's ironic because those protected by this tolerance are generally the ones who make the most noise about political correctness being out of control.

Doesn't the Bible pretty much treat women as 2nd class citizens where their only job is to do everything their husband wants? Perhaps you should read the Bible more so you could realize that you're not entitled to an opinion and should be making OneM a sammich right now.

    Not sexist, just holy.

Great post. I grew up in a pretty similar environment and I started to realize the same things as I got older.

I believe (haha, believe...) that folks like you and ECU (and even myself) would make good secular humanists. There are some undeniable benefits of getting together every week with friends/family and focusing on life, community, etc. You don't need archaic religions to do exactly that.
  29. 10 deaths in 10 years? Seems low.
  30. wait, so, in essence, Michigan is legalizing hate crimes?

Does this mean we can move to Michigan and bully the bullies and claim that our religion doesn't believe in judgment?
