Okay was this a good movie?? yes. But critics been making it out to be this awesome movie with a GREAT story and I just didnt buy the story.
for about 90 minutes loved this movie. however then a bunch of things happened made NO
SENSE.
STOP READING IF YOU DONT WANT MOVIE RUINED
A) if costello is a FBI informant, why is everbody after him? movie makes clear there are MANY moles on either side but if the guy they are all after is already in FBI, what does it matter?
B) Leo dies. dont have a dicaprio man crush but this WHOLE movie is set up like a "donnie brasco" watch the mole outsmart the bad guys movie and then that douche shoots him with no warning when he gets off elevator. Think better ending would be Leo getting the psych chick.
C) Speaking of the elevator scene, reminded me of the micheal jackson south park when all the cops kill each other at the end. was just plain STUPID. and how does Damon explain three guys getting executed at close range, ALL COPS. I know they show him explaining it but how the hell do cops buy it.
i want marty to win a oscar but not for this mess. -
very good movie, but obviously there are some unanswered questions. I'm guessing thats just how its supposed to be. Ending is odd, but I don't think a 'typical', canned, guy gets the girl with Leo and the psych. would have been any better.

I posted this in another thread responding to you and how you did not really like the film.
The only reason you give this a B- is because you overhyped it wayyyyy too much for yourself, hence disappointment. There is no way you can give this movie a B- and pretend to know anything about movies. A- maybe B+ if you had a better reason than "if the ending was less messy". My ratings by category:
Direction - A
Script - A
Acting - A+
Those being the main categories, and since I fail to see how you could argue with any of those gradings, B- is an AWFULLY ridiculous rating for The Departed. My problems with it were minor, but they came mainy from the storyline and plot itself. Yet the story (Costello and the micro-processor deal with the Chinese) takes a back seat to what the movie really is about: The two young Irish boys who took very different paths. The portraits of Costigan and Sullivan are so vivid, that the story doesn't mean much anyways. End of rant if you want to call it that.
Now for your new questions.
A) The State police obviously don't know that he is an FBI informant. The FBI guy that was "sititng in" may not even have known Costello was tipping off to the FBI. Who even knows if he was a good informant. I hate your argument here - who really cares about this? I could respond with a million irrelevant questions. The do not really develop that part, it was only meant to induce the scene in which Sullivan finds out and eventually kills Costello.
B) I'm sorry, I really really liked the ending BECASUE it wasn't your typical Hollywood ending. Having Costigan killed fits with his whole character. He was tormented throughout the whole movie. Leading a double life. In love with a girl who already has committments but cannot escape his vulnerability. He gets to have her in pieces - but not really, as she ends up giving him the shaft. I felt sorry for him the whole movie, and when he died it was even more realistic, becasue I was actually sad that he died, rather than just shrugging it off as another death.
C) The cops buy it because he is a Seargent and one of the highest level cops in the Department?? Again though, who really cares. You are just looking for things to be wrong. All movies have stuff like this. Give me five of your favourite movies and I will find plenty of arbitrary stuff like this to point out to you. -
1) There is no way in hell he could have been an FBI informant. He knowingly killed dozens and dozens of people in the Boston area throughout his life, the FBI loves to posterize these kinda murderes and drug traffickers.
2) Leo's character couldn't hook up with the pysch chick, she is still married to Paul Walker's character in RUNNING SCARED. You know... where she plays a housewife whose husband is an undercover cop that is involved in an underground crime family and gets shot at the end? That one.
3) Why did my whole movie theater laugh when Leo got shot and then Matt Damon shot the other dirty cop? Is death that funny? I am one of the biggest jokesters on this site obv, but since when did cold blooded murders in a serious movie become a huge laugh attack?? -
lets see
1) goodfellas
2) casino
3) taxi driver
4) raging bull
5) mean streets
ALL BETTER THEN THIS( how can people say this movie is better then casino and its GETTING universally better reviews). I did go in with huge expections and movie fufilled them for 90 minutes then went "john woo" and lost me. B FUCKING MINUS! -
This movie is waaaayyyy better than Casino. I can already see that there is no way I am going to persuade you otherwise, but I will give you my thoughts on Casino anyways. I am a very big Scorsese fan, just as I see you are. However, within Scorsese himself I can see that we are very different. Fine. Casino is WAY too long. There is just no reason for it to be so long. One of the most classic examles of a movie being overlong in modern cinema. I also did not like how the story was told in Casino (this is what we would call the "narrative" aspect.) It could have been done in a much cleaner way and had a better flow and pace. There is also way too much violence in the movie, which is not a bad thing in itself, but it needed some balance. It needed some comic relief, and geeze, what better way to do that than through Joe Pesci. Alas no, a huge opportunity missed. The Departed was FULL of comedic relief, which was one of the major suprises (which I thoroughly enjoyed) about the film. The movie was fucking hilarious at times (Costello's rat anyone?? Marky Mark out of left field??) It is also one of the biggest reasons why I liked The Departed more than Casino. Casino was dark, drab, too long and at times actually BORING - always a bad sign for a movie.

CASINO was not that good, but THE DEPARTED isnt all that amazing either. Both better than Texas Chainsaw Massacre though. (Saw that last night)

Who the fuck are you?
I'm the guy that does his fucking job, you must be the other guy! -
