  1. Anyone have any experience refinishing hardwood floors?

I recently bought a house with extensive oak hardwood and just finished sanding it bare....finishing with a 150 grit. I am going to stain it dark and will be water popping the floor to reopen the grain/pores of the oak.

    My questions are

After water-popping is it safe to walk on the floor or do I risk 'smashing' the freshly raised grains the water pop produced?

Typically, I would stain and work my way out of a room. But, if damage occurs to the grain would I work my way into the room...walking over the freshly stained area.

Cliff notes: This post is worded poorly.
  2. pooping tho?

  10. man I just laughed harder at that than I probably should have
  11. do you mean "popping" I thing that is the term , go for it , pop that shizzy up .
  12. A friend that did hardwoods for a few years says dont step on it. seal it and let it dry. if you still have work to do in the room do it before your finish coat and it will be fine

  13. Covert attempt for an undertitle?
  14. First off you wasted bith time and effort as well as money finishing it with a 150 grit

With a proper machine depending on the level of scracthes you would need 100 grit max to finish usually like a 40-80-100 job most contractors we sell to finish with 80

Water popping is to enhance the grain and is not done by all floor sanders it's personal preference
  15. Welp, I didn't chemically strip the old finish/stain off. I used 24 grit and a random orbital sander...it did indeed take a long time.

I went down to a 150 grit to eliminate all the swirls/UFOs in the wood from the initial agressive stripping grit. I went 24, 36, 40, 80, 120, 150. This is the first time I've ever attempted this...so lesson learned I guess.

But I water popped it last night to raise the grain and open the pores in the oak and I am staining tonight.

Popperhead...since you seem aware. Can I walk on the now popped floor and work my way out of the room while staining? Or, do I need to work my way in and walk over stained areas to not damage the popped floor?

    Reason: 40 grit, not 30

  18. Sorry tuff I was busy at work (coincidently in a hardwood flooring shop) yes you can WALK ON IT it's obviously dry better to walk on it than fresh stain. I must ask what type of stain your using. And I strongly suggest an oil based product for a more consistent stain. Duraseal by minwax is the best IMO Please pm me for any other questions Im pretty knowledgeable in flooring as I've dOne it for many years
  19. Thanks popper. I am using Minwax oil based, but just the standard Wood Finish variety. I'm mixing 2 parts Red Mahogeny, 1 part Jacobean.

A lot of what I have googled said don't walk on it...but I to me that seems nearly impossible and counterintuitive. I mean, it would take forever to work my way into all rooms from one starting point. (3 bedrooms, long hallway, living room, dining room). Not too mention the damage/problem with treading over a freshly stained floor.

I think I've committed (in my mind) to walking on it...your post sealed it for me. So, if it looks like shit, I'm blaming you. :)

Leaving work in about 15 minutes to start staining. Wish me luck. Will post pics when I'm all done.
