Would you rather be the best in the world at ONE thing?
or
Be pretty good/skilled in EVERYTHING?
and if your going to say 'it depends what is the best ONE thing'
think of skills that are like hobbies or passions. (skilled game like golf, tennis, poker, chess player) and not things that mean things like doctors or lawyers because those things are hard to judge in just a skill asset.
and if you choose that ONE skill, list it and explain why? -
pretty good/skilled in everything. being a well-rounded human makes for a much more enjoyable life than being an idiot savant.
-
all your eggs in one basket is rarely (if ever) a good thing
-
I'd be the world's greatest public speaker
Follow the path of Hitler
Everybody would want to have lunch with me -
best at one thing.
as long as it doesnt make you functionally retarded at everything else. -
I would rather be this making 50k a year than rain man inheriting 3 million dollars.
anyway forcing yourself to become well-rounded is what helps you discover your real talents. it wouldn't be fair to offer someone ultimate success in one pursuit while restricting their ability to improve themselves elsewhere. -
* milestone post *
and this is why i'll never be rich. I enjoy doing a lot of things well, and admittedly, i do not excel at any one thing. Played most sports as a kid and was pretty competitive in several. Always felt that i had something to contribute and was more of a team player than an individualist. Even with music, i've played several instruments with several bands and held various roles within those bands. I wouldn't want it any other way. -
But nobody is saying you cant become well rounded, you just wont automatically be good at everything. It would be like living your life right now, except you are the best in the world at one thing. If anything, being the best at one thing would give you more free time (assuming you use that skill to become rich) to become more well rounded.

So are we retarded at everything else of we pick one thing or can we learn everything else based on our current skills. I'd pick being the best musician in the world. Everything else I want in life would come after naturally. Money, women, free time to do what ever else in the world I want, etc
-
I mean, the only way this question makes sense is if you are pretty shitty at everything else. if you are just your normal self and then awesome at one thing, its a pretty stupid hypothetical isnt it?

I think when you say you want to be the best at something, you have to be more specific than just saying music - like you would have to say you want to be the best guitar player in the world. To be the best guitar player in the world would mean you have to devote yourself entirely to that craft since there are thousands of great guitar players. Once you become the best, you would have to continue to work your ass off to remain the best. That doesn't leave you much time to enjoy or excel at many other disciplines.
-
you make a good case but I still think I'd rather automatically be good at everything.

for me at least, saving a lifetime of working toward that goal beats a lifetime as the best golfer in the world. I think I could make plenty of money if I was good at everything, and being uber rich has never been my dream in life regardless. if at my age I was instantly "pretty good" at everything I do, I would have plenty of time to become the best in the world at something.
for a lot of talents, staying the best in the world demands huge commitments to training. that part wasn't stipulated but maybe it needs to be.

I read Z-Fresh being the best musician as him wishing he was dead at 27
Anything else you want to tell us somebody in OT will call the police to come save you Z -
im the best in the world at internet-posting.
Im functionally retarded at all else~ -
I would choose to master juan skill, but the jaun skill would be the ability to quickly master anything.
-
I think I would choose to be the best in the world at one specific thing. What that thing would be, I cannot decide. I love playing poker, was a pretty decent writer when I was younger, there are a few options I could go for . . .
But definitely would enjoy being the acknowledged "best in the world" at something. -
Best golfer in the world would be something I would seriously consider. Maybe baseball or basketball. Best guitarist would also be cool. It would be hard to beat playing the best golf courses and the top tournaments all over the world and making millions doing it. I'll probably think of more later.

you're thinking of my question correctly...

being the best in the world requires sacrifice... i guess i should've made that clear.
