Studying for finals and one of these questions came up at the end of one of the chapters in my book.. I changed the question slightly fwiw.
Which of these would you consider to be art?
-Musical production
-Movie production
-Baseball
-Sex
-Painting
-Driving
-Writing (books, articles, screenplays, etc)
What factors cause you to distinguish a subject as art?

I slap my dikk all over that manikins face. What isnt art would be a better question imo.
-
everything in one way or another is a form/peice of art.
-
Anything that I can do myself is not art. I've accepted that I have no artistic gifts & I think that many folks that go around calling themselves artists ought to do the same.
-
cooking tho
-
anything that is put in art museum.
-
i think the biggest interest in my life is understanding "the art of _____"
art is easily associated to perfection for me. which is arguably what famous paintings and drawings and pictures and albert pujols is all about. relative perfection -
^not all art is idealistic
I think after you strip it down to the bare bones, art is the use of technical skill in order make a creative expression. -
aye i can see that, perfection and idealistic is too absolute. original and creative expression is well within the game as well in understanding the arts :)

Edited By: LoveHatePoker Dec 4th, 2010 at 10:05 AMim nitpicking here, but that definition seems to limit art to the act of making art.art is the use of technical skill in order make a creative expression.
"art is the use of technical skill in order to make..." so, for example, art is the act of painting, but the painting itself (what's on the canvas) is not art.
imo, whatever is expressed in the "creative expression" is the art.
i guess you could say that the act of painter painting could be considered art, but then the "creative expression" is his movements... like how ballet is considered art. imo
Reason: it's almost 5am, not sure if this makes sense to anyone -
There is an art to everything. You could classify art as all of the above. You could say art is anything that you can do beyond the standard or norm, in a case like a baseball player making an outstanding play ect... You could also say art is something you see or hear that makes you think or see something that makes you feel like you never have before. I think art is something different to everyone, but is close to experiencing an eye opening realization that you just gained human/life knowledge/emotion when you didn't expect it.

if the act itself is art, one could reasonably assume that the product of the act is art as well.

lol. do fisherman create fish?
-
No but flyfishing is an art form compared to other forms of fishing, anyone can catch a fish with a worm and hook....
-
lol - they're the product of the art. Okay - so not really. I'd just been looking to throw in fly fishing as an art, and figured you left the door open enough for me.
I'd be interested in reading AbQ's definition of art (and then respond tl;dr) lol. -
