  1. It's going to happen. Maybe not today, maybe not this year, but sometime in the next 30-40 years, there will be a major earthquake (7.0M or greater) that will hit southern California. Hundreds of buildings collapse, thousands of people die, tens of thousands injured, millions without power, sanitary services, etc. Martial law is put in place, there will be chaos on the streets, looting, robbery, killings, street justice.

So what do you think will happen? Not just in the area impacted by the earthquake, but also to some of the larger scale matters (economy, politics) or even the "unimportant" stuff like sports and entertainment.

  2. San Fran will be the epicenter

    God hates Fags
  3. Eh, they've watched the raiders and golden state warriors the past decade, how worse could it be?
  4. By far the #1 thing that worries me about moving back to CA.
  5. I believe the technical term is "natural bankruptcy and liquidation".
  6. California is pretty earthquake proof. Will people die??? yes....thousands??? doubt it.
  7. lol @ 7.0 being the big one. more like 9+

  8. OK - 8.0M or more - enough to collapse buildings (and regardless of how earthquake proof the buildings are, some will fail).

episode 8 ("San Francisco 8.0 Earthquake")

It's a show put on by The Weather Channel. I haven't found it on youtube or anything to link though, unfortunately.
  10. Spent 6 months in Cali. No fucking earthquakes.

    So bummed.

In reality, there were probably hundreds of earthquakes near you while you were there.

I've only ever been around 3 or 4 that were strong enough to feel tho, so that you did't feel one isn't too surprising
  12. Vancouver keeps getting warnings that we are overdue for the big one. I am a little concerned, so have a stockpile of food and water to help me survive for 6 months off the grid if it comes to that. I have 10K in cash as I don't think if a big one hits I will be able to go to a bank and withdraw money. This will make cash king, and I can try to profit for selling my cash in the expected food lineups.

Well yea. There are baby earthquakes like every day but you just dont feel them.

I experienced one in Jersey last year and it was pretty crazy. Wouldnt have minded another earthquake ride.
  14. I'm like the only guy in delaware county that didnt feel that earthquake last year. Got ten text messages in 30 seconds.
  15. LA will break off and become an island, like in that one Steve buscemi movie.
  16. i can't wait to get some of that yuma beachfront property

You should buy gold with your cash if you want something with perceived value.

I don't think cash will be very useful in a post earthquake chaos scenario. I'd imagine food, water, shelter, guns and ammunition have the most value if things get really bad.
  20. I remember this convo when I lived in So Cal since like 1990. I mean there were door to door salesman selling water heater earth quake tie downs after Northridge.

Good point about the Cascadia subduction zone. I'm not sure if the Pacific Northwest is "overdue" yet, but the due date, so to speak, is approaching for sure.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1700_Cascadia_earthquake

It says that there's been about ~500 years on average between earthquakes >8.0, the shortest interval between quakes being 300 years.

In these kinds of earthquakes though you're not going to necessarily be worried about buildings collapsing and such from the earthquake itself since the epicenter will be offshore. You'll worry about tsunamis mostly. It would be the same kind of situation as the one off the coast of Japan in 2011, geologically speaking.
  22. Living in Western Washington I remember the 2001 6.8 Quake and have been waiting for the big one for a while. I live roughly 10 miles from the epicenter of this one. http://www.dnr.wa.gov/ResearchScienc...qually_eq.aspx

Was pretty nuts feeling that and ever since we have been waiting for the "BIG" one. I remember sitting in class the day after discussing when it would happen and being worried. Oh and was in 6th grade shop class when it happened so that was a little crazy. Didn't have any power tools out or running since it was a very basic class.
  23. I was in Northridge less than 2 miles from the epicenter. Destroyed everything. Didn't have water for a week or electricity for 2. I lived with my dad in an apartment but was with my mom at the time. Our apartment was real fucked up (worse than my mom's house 2 miles from epicenter), everybody was sleeping outside scared it was going to collapse. Ended up getting yellow tagged (meaning damaged but don't have to leave, red tagged you did). 5 buildings in the complex and we were literally the only ones to stay because we couldn't afford to move. Lived there for several months by ourselves. A lot of our neighbors completely left the state, that is how hard it shook, scared the shit out of people and aftershocks everyday did not help. Trust me, you don't want to be in an earthquake Jaybone or anybody else. They are ok when a couple hundred miles away in the middle of the desert but not when right below you. And the Northridge quake is nowhere near as powerful as other quakes. Unlucky that it was close to the ground in a heavily populated area.

I have pictures of my apartment and collapsed buildings in the area in my safe, which I can't open, posted about that yesterday ha

There was a bigger quake in the Valley (Sylmar) in 71 I believe

lol, I wouldn't worry about that. High rises ftw
  26. Yeah the quake around here was so deep that the damage was minimal. There was 1 death caused by a Heart Attack but that was all. I have lived here my whole life and we have had small ones periodically but haven't had one in a while. At this point I don't worry about it unless I see a post like this and then I start to think about what could happen soon. We also have the highest Volcano in the continental US within 100 miles of here so that's pretty crazy to think about too if we have an Earthquake over 8.0. I do love the scenery around here but we pay for it with shit like this that we have to worry about that most the country doesn't.

Oh the joys of living on the Ring of Fire.
