I did some research, but OT's opinions on brands and specs would be much appreciated. I'm looking for something in the 50-60 inch range if that matters. Thanks.

That's what she said.

Reason: rectangle one for smarty pants here -
Can't go wrong with samsung. IMO I have a 55" led that I love. As with any technology, whatever you get will be old tech within a year.

Seriously consider a plasma TV. Its basically unanimous amongst people who review TVs for a living that plasmas have better pictures and are better for watching things with lots of motion (sports and video games). Old fears such as burn-in with plasmas are no longer a reality. Panasonic makes the best plasmas. The ST50 series by Panasonic is basically everybody's favorite TV for this year in terms of both picture quality and value. It is very reasonably priced--you can get a 60" for $1600 or so.

I'm getting ready to buy like 4 TVs and they are all going to be Panasonic plasmas. I've done extensive research. The only situation you really should definitely consider LCD/LED is when there is direct sunlight that hits the TV or windows behind where you are sitting, because then you can get some glare with plasmas, but even that is improving with new filters they put on the screens they use to decrease glare.
See:
http://reviews.cnet.com/best-high-definition-tvs/
Edit: Also, ignore what you see when you go to the store when comparing LCD/LED and plasmas side-by-side. LCD/LED tvs can get brighter than plasmas and they crank the brightness up so much in stores on all the TVs. It makes plasma TVs look dim by comparison. But you would never crank up the brightness on a TV as much as they have them in stores. Plasmas get brighter than you'd ever need.
Whatever you do, definitely do research on the internet to see which ones you want. I like going to amazon and reading the 2 star and 4 star user reviews. They can be very informative. -
MU is spot on about plasma these days.
-
here's an exerpt from an article regarding plasma burn-in on cnet:
http://asia.cnet.com/samsung-plasma-...t-62216457.htmBut despite the ever-decreasing concerns about burn-in there's one reason I will always pick a plasma over an LCD: Image quality. For the money nothing can beat a plasma for deep black levels, wide viewing angles, uniformity, and motion-blur-free gaming. Until OLED TVs become affordable--and word is they may also be susceptible to burn-in--I will be choosing a plasma for use at home.

I'm also in the market for a new tv, want a nice one but don't really wanna spend more than 2500-3k?
-
you can get the absolute best TV on the market right now for just over $3k. its a 65" panasonic VT 50. the same tv in a 55" version is around $2200. The Panasonic ST50 that I was talking about earlier costs only $1999 for a 65" (from paulstv.com, a reputable seller) and is rated the best overall TV in terms of picture quality and value.

Bought a 46" Samsung led 3d in January for 1200 off tigerdirect and I love it
-
I have a 46" inch Samsung LED 1080 (240hz i think, but its not 3D).. and it's completely different from other flat screens i've had. I get compliments on the picture all the time.

Samsungs are good until the delay with powering on problem starts.
-
my old HD picture tube went out apparently last night. Keeps on stand-by. Don't really want to spend anything to fix it, so it looks like I'm buying a new one pretty damn soon. Probably go for a Samsung plasma unless I can get an amazing deal on a Panasonic. To me, the pictures are close to equal. Didn't know about the power delay problem. Is it a deal-breaker? How long does it delay for?
-
I think MUPP sold me on the Panasonic plasma.
-
DON'T ever buy a tv off of Amazon. My coworker used to work in one of their warehouses and said the tv's get violently tossed around and treated there.
-
+ 1 on Panasonic plasma, I have one that is 3 y.o. and I still love the thing. I did have burn in once or twice from video game screen being left on too long (like overnight). However, it is barely noticeable at reasonable viewing distances and the fix is easy, just leave it on static for a while and it goes away.
-
I have had two Lg lcd's in the house for about 3 years now. (42 living room, 32 bedroom) Both have great picture, no problems and what have you.
-
And if you get a broken/defective one, Amazon is probably the most customer-friendly company in the world when it comes to returns.
-
mupp why do u need 4 tvs?
