Part time poker player, full time bum.
I really felt like I had a lot of poker momentum going right before Black Friday. The live circuit has been alright but I'm headed down to Costa Rica in a couple of weeks to get back on the online grind. I'm super amped and am expecting to really start enjoying poker again. -

architect. wish i made more money as 6 years of schooling is expensive, but i do like my job the majority of the time. it can be stressful as fuck with deadlines and asshole clients, but knowing some people who truly hate their job, i can say that i don't.

I quit my first job outta college--which I hated BTW--almost three years ago to deal poker part-time and play professionally part-time. Quality of life improved immediately. Not working for someone else is priceless in my opinion.

However, by April of 2011, I was wondering what I was doing, where I was going and if this lifestyle (really though, it's not just a job) was for me. The crazy hours, the swings, no medical insurance, etc. Then I binked a liveament right after Black Friday and another in June and thought for sure I knew what I was doing.
As you might predict, the last 6-8 months have been awful and while I'm not completely broke, I am not nearly as comfortable as I should. Nobody to blame but myself as I made some pretty awful financial decisions, but I am back to wondering if this is what I want to do long-term. I love the fact that I can wake up when I want and come and go as I please without having to answer to anyone. OTOH, it get extremely stressful sometimes between travelling, late/long hours and of course, downswings. It's also tough trying to explain to people what I do, an alarming % of people don't understand the difference between poker and gambling, even after having it explained to them.
I am not even close to ready to give up, but I do find myself wondering where I'll be in 3-5, even 10 years. At this point, I'm 28, with a finance degree that I've never actually used in an applicable field and would have to take a pretty big paycut. Reading that last sentence reminds me how lucky I am, which sometimes I take for granted. Cheers. -
I'm a sales engineer with a Fortune 100 company, my job is overall kind of a joke but I've become exceptionally personable and know our product really well so it makes the sales support and application help a breeze. Its not the most entertaining of fields but I absolutely love the people I work with, the company has good benefits and there is tons of room to move up working for a big corporation.
I also was recently approached by management to interview for a project manager job for a new, emerging industry that our company has only been in for about a year and a half. The job is completely undefined and would be up to me and another counterpart to define the role on a global scale. It would have tons of freedom and really give me the opportunity to get creative and take a great leadership role.
Depending on how this goes I will be getting my MBA starting either 2013 or 2014. I took the GMAT after studying for about 8 hours and got a 650 so I want to retake it in about 6 months actually study and shoot for a 700 which I think will be pretty easy. I really want to go back to school full time but will only consider it if I get into a top 15 school which is definitely do able with my engineering back ground, and line of work..
I have awesome friends, live in an incredible city do whatever I want on the weekends, and truly couldnt be happier. I know a lot of people say they could never see themselves working a desk job, 9-5, etc. but too be honest I like the grind of working for a huge company and working my way from the bottom. I treat every opportunity as a chance to learn something and pick up ideas that I will need when i inevitably try to start my own company. -
Well I got fired last Thursday, which coincidentally was my birthday. My boss didn't know it was my birthday otherwise I'm sure he would have waited another day to pull the trigger. Honestly, I sucked at the job. It was a sales job selling web sites and search engine optimization packages. I actually learned a shit ton while working there, but I'm not much of a salesman over the phone.
As a result of what I learned, I've decided to start my own business. Talking to business owners on the phone all day made me realize there's a huge market for social media development. I feel really motivated right now and put together a package of information for potential clients today. Tomorrow I need to do a bunch of research about what I need for licensing, taxes, etc. My goal is to have my first client in the next couple of weeks.
Anyone have some advice for a first time business owner? -
I train primary school English teachers for the Malaysian government now that the US government stole my previous job and a fat sister-banging POS named Howard stole my moneys. I loved life in Seattle but it's a very expensive place to be if you don't want to work in IT and your job is consistently laughed off with airquotes by the hippies and legally the equivalent of selling meth, owning a sawed-off, or paying a 12yo to bone. Great friends, great life at times, but zep's thread rekindled the wanderlust and I had to get back on the road...
I don't really have an ultimate goal, but the next goal is to be living in Brazil in 2014 during the World Cup. I will probably go some time next year, get a part time teaching gig for the visa and try to play poker on the side, play futbol, and re-introduce myself to Brazilian women when I wake up most afternoons.
If anyone wants to be in the OT Rio Poker house (tentatively Feb 2013 start), it's on... -
I'm a senior developer for a business service company here. Overall I love the company and what I do. I do feel I got hosed on a promotion (or at least a chance of it). Pretty much learned that managers feel no obligation to stick to what they say they are going to do.

I'm a law student and I enjoy it, for the most part. The career pressure can be a little soul-crushing at times, but the profession fits my skills perfectly and I don't completely hate life yet.
