  2. i think norton sucks, duno even if its free,

i think AVG is the best,
  3. Avg./
  4. go to cnet downloads annd see
  5. I have company stuff on here for protection but I also use www.superantispyware.com - I run the quick session every few days (5-10 minutes and you can keep working on whatever) and the full search (20-30 minutes) once every 3-4 weeks, etc...

Just run it and after it detects all the shit (usually tracking cookies) you just delete the quarantied items.
  6. Avast

AVG used to be pretty heavyweight when I used it. Avast is light on resources and hasn't failed me yet, blocks sites now and then. NOD32 failed me once so its gone.

  7. Avast

  8. dude...i did a search for "antivirus" and the first thing (besides yours) was a post from yesterday

Seems like it would take less time to just copy/paste yesterday's post for those who don't read p5s everyday...

  14. not sure if you are trying to imply that i felt he should have seen the post yesterday (which is incorrect) or if you agree that a simple search of "antivirus" would have taken the OPer less time than to type out the OP...especially since we're getting basically the same replies as that thread

  15. i dont think id trust a free anti virus. just man up

  16. AVG /thread
  17. avast +1
  18. Well there are a lot of good Antivirus software out there some of them are very heavy. I'm using now a light one called ZenOK free antivirus, that's why I consider it good. for me the speed is crusial

You shouldn't trust AV you pay for. Those dudes have a financial stake in your machine being infected occasionally.
  20. Sooooo I had to go thru some hoops to clean out some computer aids from some phony antivirus bullshit and that's all fixed now, but ever since I can't get any sound on youtube or hulu videos. There is sound on the desktop as I get a ding when I adjust the volume and preloaded videos I have on my hard drive work just fine via realplayer and windows media player. Google suggested I download a new audio driver and I did, youtube said download the newest adobe flash player and I did but the problem is the same. Any smart computer people have any other ideas for me?

I had something like this a while back, and it was driving me nuts that sound on everything but Youtube was working - seems that whatever it was had set youtube volume (and other video places) to zero and I just needed to hit the slider and turn it back up. Prob not this, but it screwed my head for a while, so maybe worth a check.

Quite the opposite. If they get the reputation of occasionally allowing things to slip through, they won't make their money.

Kaspersky is worth every single penny and more.

  23. Safe surfing habits + antivirus is the best way to avoid infections. Even with the best AV you can still get infected if you click on ads, go to non-reputable websites, open e-mails (or attachments) from unknown people (verify the the email address as well), or do peer to peer downloading. If you constantly get viruses, you need to re-assess your surfing habits unless you know how to remove viruses and/or like removing viruses.

I've had AVG, it was good but it was a resource pig. I've had Avast for 6 months and its been great.

It is not that. I think I've done all I can do. Only fix I could find was to get 30updated drivers from windows for $30, but I'm not gonna do that without a guarantee that it'll fix the problem. Looks like youtube pandora and realplayer are the things that don't work while computer sounds and things I already had on my hard drive thru windows media player work. Spent like 3 hours doing numerous troubleshooting things but nothing has worked. Bout to give up as there is no youtube customer service and pandora hasn't responded. So dumb

You sure your computer is clean?

What are you using to scan it? And why $30 for drivers?

  26. If your speakers work then you don't need a driver. FTR don't pay for drivers. EVER. You can download the from the manufacturer's website for free and it'll be the RIGHT driver not a generic one.
You can uninstall RealPlayer and then reinstall it which may work. Try looking around in Control Panel>Hardware and Sound to see if anything looks wrong. You could also reset your internet browser to its default settings- Tools>Internet Options>Advanced tab>Reset. Or try a different browser like Google Chrome, Firefox, Opera, or Chromium.
  27. avast

  28. tried all the browsers, tried uninstalling and reinstalling adobe flash and realplayer. kinda lost

  29. Found this

    1) Apparently its caused by the deletion of a single registry entry called wavemapper which some people blame on Adobe's flash player.

    Here is the fix:-

Start -> Run and enter 'regedit' or 'regedit.exe' (obviously without the quotes) - This will bring up the registry editor

    Follow the left path to:
    My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Mic… NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32

On the right pane, right click and click on New, select String value, enter 'wavemapper', press ENTER

Then right-click on 'wavemapper', select modify, and type 'msacm32.drv' into the Value Data field.

    Close the registry editor.

This should all work now without a reboot so you can get back to watch youtube clips all day.

    _______________________________

    2) Recall that in CONTROL PANEL under SOUNDS AND AUDIO DEVICES and the VOLUME tab, I said it was greyed out. Even though I had all drivers installed, it said "NO AUDIO DEVICE" and the DEVICE VOLUME could not be accessed.

Well, the problem was under the AUDIO tab and the SOUND PLAYBACK section. DEFAULT DEVICE was set to "Modem #0 Line Playback".

I clicked on the arrow on the right - for the drop down menu - and saw a second choice..."Vinyl AC'97 Audio (WAVE)".

I chose it, clicked on "APPLY", went back to the VOLUME tab, where it now read "Vinyl AC'97 Audio (WAVE)" and the volume was accessible.

clicked on "OK" - went to youtube.com and it played perfectly.
