.38 snub, .380, 45 or 9mm? I think the 45 and 9 will be intimidating for her, but really dont want a revolver... Is .380 the best choice or what do you guys suggest?
We are going to Academy today so she can hold get a feel for each so we can narrow it down. Thanks for the suggestions and help. -
Prolly a hammerless S&W Lady Smith 38 cal.
Some find the semi-autos intimidating at first. Whatever you decide to get, make sure she is comfortable with it and trained properly.
Best bet is to take her to the gun range. Go through the safety class. Let her shoot several different guns and choose her own. -

This is actually a broader question than your original questions and details cover.
Can she carry concealed in your state, is she going to go through that process, and then if she gets a CCW where will she carry? Does she want to carry in a purse or will she not mind some type of holster around her waist area? Not to stereotype but women are very picky about clothing and accessories, to include where to carry their weapons. All of this affects how big a gun you can shop for.
I would immediately rule out .380. They make 9mms about as small now and you'll have much more stopping power if you ever need to use it. The Taurus Millenium Pro in 9mm is very concealable and easy to shoot. If you don't mind a little more muzzle flip (not recoil), then the Keltec P-11 is a little smaller than that. And the Keltec PF-9 is tiny enough to fit even in a relatively tight jeans pocket, absolutely tiny.
A .38 snub is a good choice too, but some women don't like revolvers. If she wants less recoil than a 9 but likes the miniguns, looks at the Keltec P32 in .32 cal., or the Beretta Tomcat in .32 also. The beautiful thing about the Beretta is it has a tip-up barrel which makes loading very easy for females, many of whom hate trying to rack a slide.
All of these listed above you can get for well under $500. They are all fine guns that will go bang every time you shoot, but if you want the security of a snobbier name, I would recommend a Glock 26 in 9mm, a Kahr MK in 9mm (very slim), or hell, it's only $1000, get the Rohrbaugh R9.
One last suggestion: if you are unsure about her wielding a 9, just buy a Hi-Point 9mm for about $150 and test it out. They're fairly compact and reliable, have a full warranty, and if she doesn't like it you can use it as a truck gun, target shooting, or home defense.
