So I recently started working for a small software start up in downtown Austin. Before accepting the position, I got to meet everyone in the office (eleven of them), and the first thing I noticed was that all of them---every single one---had a MacBook Pro, all of which were the newer "unibody" design. Being a little under qualified to begin with, I didn't want to attract too much attention to myself by being the douche to walk in with my giant 17" eleven pound Dell gaming laptop with a trillion blinking lights and egregious design. So, I walked into the Apple store and out with a 15" MacBook Pro.

Fast forward ten days, and I'm left asking myself: what's the big fucking deal? Where's this religious experience I'm supposed to have felt by now? Isn't there supposed to be a reason I'm paying 150% more for the same specs I'd find in any Windows machine? Am I doing something wrong?
What the fuck does this do that Windows doesn't? Since 99% of the people using these aren't using them for graphic design, what about them is so endearing? To be honest, it kind of feels like a beginner's computer; the way the icons "explode" when you remove them from the dock and the way they all get bigger when you scroll over them, is really cool....if you're twelve. Do people like these so much more because they don't get viruses? Big fucking deal---if you have any idea what you're doing on Windows, you'll be fine. Download CCleaner, Glary Utilities and Malware Bytes, take 5 mins running them once a week, and you've nothing to worry about.
So, after ten days, all I've discovered about Macs is how much you can't do with them, how juvenile all the fucking icons are (is this the digital age or the analog age??), how much MS Office blows on them, how poor the screen resolution is, how poor the speaker quality is, how absurd it is that you can't remove the battery (although it does last forever), and how douchey you feel actually using one of these. -
cool fucking story brah

It's like asking what's so amazing about coco-cola, or by eating a big mac and asking to yourself," how'd they build a franchise out of this?" Brand-name pushes product. A mac can not compare to a pc, it's merely coat-tailing the goodwill that the Ipod created for apple.
-
expectations.
-
Agreed, but in this instance it wasn't the brand name that attracted me, it was the constant "omg, Macs are soooo much better" from people I've spoken to that got me to bite. In retrospect, I should asked them why---but I know I would have just gotten "because they don't get viruses" or "they're awesome for editing movies and photos".

After using a PC for my entire life, I will never go back to PC after switching to mac. My entire company is now a mac shop and MS office is NOT that tough to use on it.

Why do you bother posting here when you could be playing golf in cargo shorts, an untucked polo, and a backwards hat?
-
Wait, you went a spent which I asume is 1500 or so to fit in?
Mbn -
I feel the same way. Everytime I use one, I always find myself having to ask the person, "okay, now how do I do this? i know how to do this on a PC, but how the fuck do you do it on here?"
Then by the time im done... i just want to be back on a PC.
Maybe im one of the ones that just doesnt get it either. -
tried using my buddies apple laptop that he thought was so amazing, didn't care for it much. my HP laptop is just fine. he did talk me into getting the new iphone though and that i definitely care for.

all of which can be enjoyed on a PC by downloading free software or visiting the internet (though I do like iCal) -
really? never knew that. are they the same programs or different versions? i bet a lot of ppl dont know this. i got mine from the FTP store so i didnt really care about the price. i would agree if ur just using it to go on the internet then it probably isnt necessary but if you like using a lot of the extra features it could be worth it. i basicllay only use the camera/recorder.
-
I use a mac and I like it but it really tilts me that there's no MSPaint equivalent on Mac. There isn't even a good free version I've found -- and I've tried out like 20 that are shitty in one way or another.
-
Coming from a software developer I also don't get the hoopla with OSX. I know a lot of system admins dislike Windows for various reasons, maybe that plays a part in it? As for non-technical users I think it's more of a fashion statement than a practical choice.
-
thats probably true. its like why buy a pair of shoes at the nike store when payless gets you the same results. i wear nike. just talking shoes to walk around in. i wear nike as walking shoes.
-
iCal is one of the dumbest things on a mac

summary: not spending 150% of the price for that trendy piece of shit -
preface: i purchased a 13" macbook two years ago, intel core 2 duo. i upgraded it to 6gb of ram and dropped a 7200rpm hdd into it. it would take a lot for me to go back and work on a windows platform full time.
for me, osx feels, performs and behaves in a manner that is more intuitive and easy to use. it also feels faster, responds quicker and has never crashed. applications have crashed but it has never affected the system as a whole. from an every day usage perspective coming back from sleep/putting the machine to sleep is quicker. i don't have to worry about viruses/spyware/malware whatsoever. also application management is greatly improved with the dreaded registry finally going away.
things from the most basic tasks such as installing applications to burning cds/isos are simplified on the mac. there's a lot of power under the hood since osx is built on top of a *nix platform. if i need to drop connect to an x11 terminal, ssh, scp, wget, write a quick bash script to perform some tasks--it's all there built in. with xcode i have a full development environment and access to compile any linux based program/utility out there. much harder to do this on windows. things like networking are also greatly simplified and i have much more fined tuned access. file permission/security is based on the *nix model so it actually works and i don't have to "allow/cancel" every time i move my mouse
i run vmware fusion with a windows 7 install, it holds my MS development tools and it's nice to know that everything is running inside a vm and is sandboxed from the rest of my machine.
there are some downsides for me, it is hard to find good accounting software (quickbooks) and the email clients are very meh. i've been playing with office 2011 beta 5 and have been pretty impressed at outlook.
overall when you buy apple you buy a lifestyle: ipad, ipod, iLife and so forth. all that software is connected together and it "just works". this is where apple has made the greatest strides in that they control soup to nuts production. it crashes less because they QA the drivers, the software and everything in between.
if you're a serious developer unless you're in an MS shop there's no way you can't appreciate the much more powerful environment a mac gives you. -
They are overpriced for sure. Most Mac users just think they are superior because they are sleek little devices...
If I could just drop the extra 700 when I wanted a machine I would go.Mac because they are neat. Because I know you can get the same specs for 700 less I go PC. -
i don't know why people always compare the mac prices to pc prices. you are not paying for the hardware, you are paying for the lifestyle and the way things work together. it's like saying why sit in first class vs coach? they are both just seats and we will get there at the same time.
for people who do more than surf the web and email, osx provides an incredible development platform; something that linux users and windows developers who aren't tied to MS dev products have long sought after. -
Im buying a lifestyle?
Seriously?
