First of all comparing Iraq to Vietnam is like comparing apples to oranges, 2 different things, imo.

In Vietnam we were fighting communism, we stuck our noses where it didn't belong. Now fast forward to Iraq, we put this dictator in power in the 70's cause we needed a friendly gov in Iraq and all middle east countries. The people of Iraq suffered for 30+ years under the dictatorship of Saddam. He tortured, killed, raped, stole whatever he wanted to people for years. One thing I heard is this. In the 5 star hotel in Iraq and young couple had just gotten married and they came from a well to do familys. So they got the honeymoon sweet. Which was on the top floor. Well the Saddam sons had the rest of that floor (unpaid for). The young couple got out of the elevator and were heading to there room when the saddam brothers noticed the bride. One thing lead to another and they killed the hubby, then took turns raping the bride before finally throwing her off the balcony to her death. All just for FUN.

Our country meddling in Iraqi politics lead to this and other travesties happening. So I see it like this, regardless of the oil, WOMD's, etc..etc We fucked it up and if we are gonna play international police, we should fix our fuckups. Kinda like the nosey neighbor/aunt/sister/mom etc who is always in your business then ruins your life. Since they got involved they should help fix it.

Do I agree with the US doing these things? No! I don't I think we should worry more about our country then the rest of the world. Mind our own business. But the american people voted, put these "leaders" in power and it's America's responsibility to fix it. We fucked it up and we should fix it. We can't just abandon this.

Sure if oil wasn't in Iraq we prob would of ignored it. But that is life, so we gotta deal with it. Besides, if you were one of those soldiers who died for their country would you want it to be for a cause that was abandoned? That would disrespect all the lives lost.

I know if I died in Iraq, Afghanastan etc... I would want the job finished. Talk to the soldiers who have been there. My brother in law is in the army and he supports the idea. Thought he can't say it cause Bush is his "commander in chief" he doesn't support the plan.

You want my vote, figure out how to straighten this up and bring our troops home. Don't just fucking run and hide and quit, that would make me embarassed to be an american.

how long do we need to be there?? what needs to happen?? please kajun or norcal or someone that knows help me out here please..... im uneducated on this to the point that i have no idea what the real goal is of us being there at this point. is the goal even attainable?? what is the goal? anyone?

Not at all, but what I said is the truth. Democracy isn't perfect, but it's the best thing running. People want to know what the problem is, that's the problem. So instead of doing things right our system is holding us back and costing us more money. But atleast we have freedom right? Sort of...

The basic principals of democracy work in theory but sometimes in the real world things need to be just fucking handled. To bad no one has the balls to man up and do it. Which would be better for this country.

Seriously what's the difference between spending all this money in 12-18 months or spending 3x that amount over 10 years? Standard american mentality, what looks good for this years budget is better then facing reality...

We should of learned from Vietnam that politicians can't run/win a war. That's what we have a military for. Give them what they need and let them do there jobs. It's like having a gun with no fucking bullets, what's the fucking point? I think in every other since, almost, we should have checks and balances but in a WAR voted on in both houses, give our military what it wants and let it do it's thing. We have the best stuff in the world, why hold it back and make it harder for them?

IMO, my post below your's explains it.. but we should bring back the draft or make it mandatory for a 2 year stint in the military for kids, maybe based on ACT scores or something.

We need to give the military what they need, let them straighten shit up over there and get the fuck out. We are trying to do shit half assed and as everyone should learn or will learn, when you do shit half assed you just have to go back and do it right. Sad part is we keep re-doing it half assed... Reason why above...

yes, but it also should be argued that we didn't just roll in there and squash opposition for a gov't. We gutted the joint. If we don't make sure that they have strong leaders in place (not just gov't leaders), it will definitely crumble. I just don't know enough to say for sure that we should be able to replace the chain of command in every step of the gov't and military.
