Something i've been thinking about regarding the wildcat, why is the starting QB always on the field for the play? Does there have to be a "Quarterback" on the field on every offensive possession? I just find it kind of retarded to not have an extra skill position player rather then a QB to just take up space because lets be serious the chances of a double pass happening/working are very slim.
Am i missing something here? -
bc if teams run the QB off then the Def knows what is coming. if they huddle the same and then break the huddle in the wildcat, the Def has less time to respond and align.
-
when the team huddles up, they don't usually give away their formation. butttt, if you were to notice the QB run off and and extra WR or RB trot on, then it might give defenses a chance to substitute to a more run heavy defense. thats all i can think of. i mean, that way if they decide to not run it the next play, the can always quick snap or run some kind of no huddle with the QB back behind center.
-
yah there needs to be threat that the rb can toss it back to the qb for a pass
-
pretty much been said but the defense gets the last sub in
-
So when Ricky Williams lines up right behind center, the other team doesn't know what's coming? LOL.
-
When Ricky Williams comes up behind center the defense doesn't get a chance to make substitutions. Big difference. NFL is all about what personnell you have on the field.
-
Same with Pat White, they know its the wildcat, so the eagles and dolphins think they are that much better at it then the rest of the league? Josh Cribbs (Cleveland homer) could do the same thing but brady fucking quinn is still lined up at WR
-
thx bob
-
Has anyone set up in the wildcat and then ran an end-around to the quarterback and had him throw? If not, is there some reason this wouldn't work as a trick play?
-
I think only in Madden
-
Cleveland should probably stick to working on regular passing before they start resorting to tricks... Cribbs has thrown 2 balls, one was picked, both looked awful.
Cleveland's leading receiver has 25 receptions on the year and, after 10 games, they only have 3 guys with more catches on the season than Wes Welker had yesterday... that's gross...
Can't Philly and the Dolphins just level people with Vick and Pat White? They obviously aren't as good as their starters, but they can still throw the ball... it's really all about deception. -
I obv understand why the QB is in and laughed my ass off at Stunna's first question, but.... U can only have 12 in the huddle right? So when huddle breaks the QB can sprint off the field and some one is waiting on the side line to take his spot. Not sure if thats tech against the rules, any one know??
If who ever is in the huddle must play the play then yea, QB HAS to be in other wise the offense might as well just tell the D what play they are running... -
To respond to Boondock you can't have 12 men in the huddle.

To respond to you (not even sure why I'm bothering) when the Dolphins had Ronnie Brown they weren't running it for trickery. They ran it because they're a power football team and it created a numbers issue with the defense. especially since Brown was capable of throwing the ball.
But hey I'm sure NFL teams aren't paying attention to who is subbing in and out of the game. -
Question's been answered no need for further flaming of anyone else or eachother
can't we all just get along!? -
so 11 then... wasnt really the number that mattered... I got that wrong, sorry. It was more of subbing the QB last second. Thats all
-
The defense has to have the last sub. There are very specific substitution rules in the NFL. Point is it would be really obivous if the QB was being subbed for. It's not like you can sneak him off the field.
-
gotta admit watching pennington split out wide is pretty priceless.
-
right on... In the back of my mind I new the O couldnt sub last second and U cant have more then 11 in the huddle ect. But I thought I would ask any way. Thought it would help the OP and others to didnt get it understand things a bit more.
-
Sanchez did it yesterday and the Jets had Brad Smith in. I think it was like a 3 yard loss on the run
-
Where do you have the Chargers? They're 7-3 and going to easily go to 9-3 before having to travel to Big D where I think they could win as well. Sleeper #2 seed in the AFC especially if the knock off the Bengals later in the year. They've just beat the giants, eagles and now broncos but i still feel like they aren't that great.
-
I don't have the Chargers running the Wildcat. Yes, L.T. has thrown TD passes in in past seasons, but their offense has enough weapons with Gates, Jackson, Sproles, Tomlinson, etc... to not have to resort to the Wildcat offesne.

They can beat those teams without changing offense.
