  1. I'm about to set out on a long road trip and want internet access on the road. Is there any way to do this?
  2. LOL...you could buy a really long cord. All kidding aside....you would be surprized how many wireless portals aren't secure. I think it will be just hit or miss unless you will be in a large metropolitan area.
  3. If you are talking about while traveling in a car, your best bet is a wireless modem card for your laptop or if you have a new enough cell phone, it may already function as a wireless modem (you will have to download drivers most likely from the cell company's website). You can't rely on wireless access points while in motion until WiMAX technology is fully deployed and made available to the public, which god knows how long that will take after the service companies and regulatory agencies are done fighting over it.

WiMAX is DEATH for cable modems, DSL, short-range wireless access point providers, and probably dial-up too if they make it cheap enough. The only place it is publicly deployed currently is some small town in Oregon, but the govt is using it in New Orleans for reconstruction efforts.

If you are talking about being permanently fixed somewhere and whether or not they will have wireless, hotels are usually your best bet, followed by coffee shops, or every 100 feet if you happen to be in San Francisco or San Jose.
  4. Any idea how much a good wireless modem card would cost?
