This article suggests it could be in our future. Would you go for the supposed safety and luxury of having a car that drives itself or would you prefer to be in control of your vehicle?

definitely
Driving is not that fun. Not sure why it gives so many people a hard on -
In that case over 99 percent of the population doesn't drive the "right car". I wouldn't spend my money on that car even if I had it
And the only reason to get that car is for the pussy one hopes comes with it -
if it was guaranteed not to fuck up, yes. but that is impossible so no.
-
Only if it was a sick looking coupe.
-
I love driving but I do have a long daily commute to work and sometimes I do think self-driving cars would be pretty sick. Of course when you're as paranoid as I am you probably wouldn't find them that relaxing...
Still, beats the train -
Over 30,000 people in the US died last year in car accidents. That is almost a 100 people every single day. Don't see why the technology cannot eventually be put into place to make driving much much safer even if the number is not zero

plus, no more need for designated drivers after the bar--or in reality, an end to drunk driving -
30,000 a year out of 307 million is 9.77 x 10e -5 or
.0000977 or .00977% or less than 100th of 1 percent.
Might as well be zero. -
If we had cool highways like in Minority report
-
Only if every single person in the country had these cars. Why? Because while my car can self-drive itself, that won't stop Joe Blow from T-boning me.
-
Tell that to the hundred families who lose somebody every day. Or you can tell me, my friend died 11 days ago and will be included in that number for 2010. I am going to stay with my friend in a couple weeks whose sister was killed in a car accident, I'll be sure to tell him the number may as well be zero. Just post it on your facebook, I'm sure you have some friends who will strongly disagree

Driving is one of the most dangerous things people do. Always amuses me when people say they don't think it is safe to go somewhere because of terrorism, but they don't think twice before jumping in a car, something far more likely and far more dangerous. A couple people posted it about Istanbul recently which is laughable. Or a country like Israel has experienced far more deaths on their highways than all their wars and terrorism combined -
I've had a friend die from being hit by a drunk driver. It sucks. However out of all the causes of death in this country, 30,000 is an insignificant number. If it happens it's a fluke. Comparing the danger of cars to terrorism is sensationalist at best, and intellectually dishonest at worst.
May your friend rest in peace and the family find solace. -

I only made that comparison because people are always making comments to me that they don't think a country is safe to visit because of terrorism. It is propaganda. I know that when I travel the most dangerous thing I do is get in a car. It is not something that worries me or prevents me from doing anything, but a danger nonetheless. There are more likely means of death, but if the number can be greatly reduced I am all for it. And death is just the extreme scenario, injuries and accidents are far more common... -
While admittedly this is a crude estimate, if the rate is 30,000/300 million per year and is constant over the course of your life, from birth over the next 80 years you would have a 1-[1-30,000/300,000,000]^80=~.00797 or .797% chance of dying from a car accident in your life, or in other words about 1 in 125. To me, that's scarily high, and I would welcome anything that would improve those chances.
