Cliffs: They are working on "growing" meat in laboratories. Or just read the article.

So, does "grown" meat serve the dilemma for vegetarians/vegan or will they find something else to whine about? Any OT vegetarians/vegans to weigh in?

Can anyone get beyond the "yuck factor", that this is totally unnatural? A lot of people (who don't realize what they are eating) already eat a lot of disgusting industrial products. Some even argue that the meat we eat today fed on unnatural diets isn't even the same kinds of meat that our bodies want/are used to.

Personally, this disgusts me. I don't see any way that this can be good for you. Just because your body can ingest something, metabolize it into energy, and there are no immediate negative effects, doesn't mean that it isn't bad for your health. Basically this flies in the face of thousands of years of evolution. If anything I see this as a means to the end in a food shortage in the future...especially to the lower classes and/or a way to feed third world countries.

    welp...
  5. i just assumed the stuff i get at taco bell McDs was grown anyway.
  6. So long as taste and texture were not compromised, I'd be okay with it. Probably be good for the environment, too, with all the crops used to feed livestock now feeding people, less deforestation for livestock, etc.

    Yay science !!!

  7. cant be much worse than the chicken nuggest I enjoyed last night

  8. Grow me some filets, bitchass scientists. Staring at you.
  9. yea a lot of the meat i eat at home comes from a locker that either a) for pork products comes from a farm down the road i know b) the beef comes from my families cattle.

on the road i eat whatever is available at truck stops normally fast food. yea been putting off getting a fridge for my truck then itll mostly be sammiches. so on the road at fast food i doubt id care at home fuck off i want my beef and pork from the farms.

i do wonder about the nutrition factor. will the artificial stuff have all the unknown(stuff science doesn't know is good for your body) qualities of real meat

  11. You've been eating cloned meat for a while now. I suppose that that's technically grown. No special labeling, nothing. It makes me shudder, but cheeseburgers are tasty.

Even cloned meat comes from a living animal. An animal that has to consume food. That food makes up the content of the "meat" of the animal that you consume. 2 cloned cows, one being fed corn, one on a natural grazing diet would produce totally different meat. They simply clone for to get the best traits out of the meat.

I've actually been reading a lot lately about our food sources. It's not pleasant...to say the least. I've tried to change my habits somewhat, but its tough given the cost and availability of more "natural"/sustainable meats. I foresee a larger movement in the future where people began to care and investigate where their food comes from and demand sources different than what we get now.

  13. I'm sure this will turn out just like genetically engineered fruits/vegetables. It will quite literally be the exact same thing as normal fruits/vegetables (which are also constantly genetically engineered, just in a less efficient way), yet people will be all afraid of it and shit because it just doesn't seem like it came from jesus as much as the stuff that is grown the old-fashioned way.

There's a difference between breeding plants to give them traits you want by selective breeding, and changing their DNA via scientific means. The plants still have to grow in dirt, absorb nutrients, convert sunlight into energy, etc. A lot of that is a natural process minus "forcing" the plants to breed in a certain way.

Growing meat is no way "natural", at least from what I'm reading.

  15. its fkn disgusting that people will actually eat this shit, as shown by how much gross ass "food" people eat from Mcds, TB etc. Meat should come from an animal, free range and natural organic feed preferably, not a lab. Just so fkn gross

edit: gross to eat by choice, not because they are poor and starving, this type of "meat" would work for countrys experience a severe famine or something

no there isn't. you are simply accomplishing the same task in a less efficient manner via breeding.

EDIT - I think I misunderstood your post. disregard if so.

So you're saying sitting 2 plants (or animals) next to each other to breed is the same as taking an embryo/eggs/etc and introducing chemicals that will inhibit or allow certain traits? Interesting, yes . . .
