  1. So last year, as I usually do, I took my tax info to my friends who always does my taxes for me. I got back $1600 or 1700, which is more than usual ( usually about 800-900.

We did it line by line as we always do ( work in a casino, so it's pretty easy to do our taxes )....

Just got home and had a letter from the IRS saying I owe them $1780 by August 18th, or I can dispute it. Is this an easy process or? I am pretty shocked right now, never heard of anything like this.

  3. Ive never had any disputes on my personal taxes but Ive had to disputes penalties for late payment of payroll taxes in the past. Each time the IRS was surprisingly helpful and when they were wrong they removed the penalties. I always call them first and let them know I am disputing it, they will make a note in the file and give me a timeframe to send in the proper paperwork. Usually get a response a few weeks later.

If you speak with anyone they should give you their ID number as soon as they say hello. Make sure you take notes of who you speak with and what they say.

This is for last year, yes? Did the letter say how they arrived at the $1780?
  4. What is the IRS disputing? Are they saying that you did not report income that you earned or are they saying you are not allowed a deduction/credit that you took on your return? Most IRS notices will give a detailed breakdown showing the return the way you filed it vs. the way they think you should have filed it. Then they will summarize the proposed changes and you can either:
    a. agree to the changes and cut them the check
    b. dispute the changes and send correspondence back with proof of why you disagree

I deal with these people on a daily basis and the call center workers are not the brightest or most helpful people in the world. Hope everything works out for you. If you have any specific questions feel free to PM me and I can try my best to help out.
  5. Its happened to me before when some doosh didnt give me a 1099 on time. I paid and moved on.

    Turbo Tax FTW!

  6. Is the IRS guy that signed the letter also the Vice Chancellor of Nigeria?
  7. Happened to me this year too

  8. 100% happened to me about 5-6 years ago. really sucked. i didnt choose them to reaudit because i took the papers to our military legal and they said the guy that prepared my shit fucked up. it was roughly for around the same amount. kinda blew, thats alot of money to come up with in a short amount of time. turbo tax has been my #1 fan ever since, because now that you are highlighted you will be skylined for the next few years.
  9. easy process? uh no. Its the gov't.

As someone already mentioned what are they disputing? They rnt just gonna sent a letter saying you owe up X amount. Pay up.

sometimes that's why its worth payin alil more and getting a professional to do it or someone to guarantee it. tough luck bro.
  10. The letter should state why you owe $1780. It's likely because you claimed some credit that you shouldn't have, or had income that you didn't report (intentionally or innocently). You don't have to come up with the full $1780 right now, you can give them a call and they are usually pretty good about letting you pay it in increments. I'd probably speak with a tax professional before I did anything. But like I said...it should tell you why you owe.
