I ask this question because of the Limbaugh thread. It seems like this used to be an easier question to answer. Dictionary.com says:

Cultural Dictionary
racism
The belief that some races are inherently superior (physically, intellectually, or culturally) to others and therefore have a right to dominate them. In the United States, racism, particularly by whites against blacks, has created profound racial tension and conflict in virtually all aspects of American society. Until the breakthroughs achieved by the civil rights movement in the 1950s and 1960s, white domination over blacks was institutionalized and supported in all branches and levels of government, by denying blacks their civil rights and opportunities to participate in political, economic, and social communities.
It seems to me that most of what I hear called racism today, doesn't necessarily fit the definitions above.
I once made a joke about Kwanzaa and was called a racist. I enjoy jokes referring to racial stereotypes about all races, including mine.
I am told that having people of color as friends, and highly compensated employees is not a valid argument for not being a racist. I don't think any single race is inherently superior to any other race.
So, WTF makes someone a racist or not a racist?
Can someone say something racist, but apologize and take certain actions that make them not a racist, or once you say something inappropriate, you are a racist for life?
Are Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, and/or the Rev. Wright racists?
Is the definition different for white vs black than other combinations? - <LI>

So, WTF makes someone a racist or not a racist? Racist for even asking this question imo
Can someone say something racist, but apologize and take certain actions that make them not a racist, or once you say something inappropriate, you are a racist for life? Nah, it's a mark for life like the Scarlet Letter or the Dark Mark
Are Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, and/or the Rev. Wright racists? Nah, they're black.
Is the definition different for white vs black than other combinations? Reverse racism ftw? -
Tommy Joe Thompson is racist
PDT SACRAMENTO -- The case of a murdered African American store clerk, whose family was initially denied workers' compensation benefits because her killer allegedly acted on racial motives, has led to a change in California law
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a bill Sunday that will prohibit insurers from denying workers' compensation claims on the grounds that the employee's attacker was motivated by prejudice.
The measure, AB1093 by Assemblywoman Mariko Yamada, D-Davis, was prompted by the case of Taneka Talley, a clerk at a Dollar Tree store in Fairfield.
Talley, 26, was stabbed to death in March 2006 while stocking shelves. Tommy Joe Thompson of West Sacramento was arrested a short time later and charged with murder.
At a March 2007 hearing on the defendant's mental competency to stand trial, a defense psychiatrist testified that Thompson had told him he stabbed Talley because she was black.
Thompson, who is white, was eventually convicted of murder and sentenced to 51 years to life in prison. Prosecutors did not accuse him of a hate crime, and the motive for the killing was not an issue in his trial.
But while the trial was pending, Dollar Tree's insurers denied benefits to Talley's 11-year-old son. In a letter to the family's lawyer, an attorney for the insurer said the child wasn't entitled to benefits because his mother had been attacked for racial reasons, as shown by the psychiatrist's testimony.
State law requires employers to pay benefits to employees or their survivors for all work-related injuries. However, an attack that arises from purely personal motives is not covered.
After protesters picketed the Fairfield store and the family appealed the insurers' decision, Dollar Tree agreed to settle the claim in January. The amount of the payment wasn't disclosed.
Yamada said Tuesday that AB1093, which she called Taneka's Law, guarantees that "no other California family will have to suffer the dual trauma of losing a loved one and having a benefits claim denied, based on one person's personal hatred of another because of who they are." -
prejudiced is the word that most people mean to say, but it doesnt have the sting that racist has... so, meh.

- So the standard definition is no longer relevant? Can you state a definition or is it ineffable?
Are Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, and/or the Rev. Wright racists? Nah, they're black.
- So, if you are a member of a race that has been discriminated against, you can't be a racist? Even against some other race that never discriminated against their race?
Is the definition different for white vs black than other combinations? Reverse racism ftw?
- Asking questions about racism is racist? -
for more seek "hate crime" and its definition.
-
6 liberals will call you a racist every time you post in a thread that has the WORD racism in it

So I think we can all agree that humans are just advanced animals, right?

If there are inherent differences between different breeds of dogs/cats/cows/horses/etc. why wouldn't there be inherent differences between different races(i.e. breeds) of humans?
I think it's pretty safe to say that black people are more athletically gifted than white people, considering the proportion of blacks to whites in the NFL/NBA.
What do people think about this? -
racism = using power/authority over others of a certain racial class due to their inability to overcome their lack of power
-
they think you are a racist

Why though?
Wouldn't science say that we are different? It can be seen in the increased occurance of certain diseases in people of different races. It's kind of like saying men and women are the same.
What I'm not saying though is that a certain race is superior to another or should hold superiority over another. -
racism is taught.
-
it's like rape; you know it when you feel it
-
Oh I can't believe I'm going here...

... some attribute African American athletic superiority directly to selective breeding during slavery. Since slave owners wanted the most physically capable slaves they bred their superior "stock" to produce ever more physically gifted slaves. Several generations of this practice of mainly the physically superior specimens passing on their genes (not to mention the base fact that the slaves who survived the journey over were already physically superior) gives them a superior gene pool today form an athletic standpoint.
...others will argue that it is environment. In other words, urban African Americans see athletics as their best way out of poverty, disadvantage, call it what you will. Their motivation is higher, so the effort is stronger. If someone thinks the only way they can attend college is to get a scholarship, and they see athletics as the way to go, the effort put into achieving that goal will be greater than a person who has more options in life. -
Went in doubt just don't.... Thats all I have to say
-
we are all in this together and until people get past the past we will not move forward. Nearly every race has been wronged at some point but the focus now is on the persecution of the Blacks in America and how we can fix this injustice. What people don't seem to realize is this just entrenches racism that much more because it's still discrimination.
I don't know about the rest of you, but if i'm hiring somebody, color plays no factor, i want the best possible person who is qualified. If i was yellow and somebody didn't hire yellow people i wouldn't want to work there anyways, too many other places where yellow people can work. -
when you don't like people because of their race
-
lol, dude, I was clearly being facetious with my post

Race has no foundation in science; it is only a social thing we are taught.
-
and why did they deny opportunity? because they don't like the person because of their race.
I guess prejudice is like passive racism? does racism require an act, or just a feeling? I think someone can be racist even if they never have an interaction with someone of that race they hate. I dunno. same thing I think -
saying blacks are more athletically gifted than whites = not racist
saying whites are typically more intelligent than blacks = racist -
believe it or not, there are actually more sports in this world than the NFL and NBA

Yes I think racism requires an act, prejudice turns to racism with the execution of the act. We are splitting hairs.

This also makes sense in the context of blacks not being able to be racists yet can definitely be prejudice. -
The reason I posted this, is that in the Limbaugh thread, some people are absolutely certain that he is a racist. There are quotes attributed to him that are, as of yet, unsubstantiated. I have listened to Rush's show a couple of dozen times over several years, and he's a bit over the top for my liking. But because of the other thread, I listened to him this morning where he denied the quotes. I just wonder how people can be certain that he is a racist. I think calling people racist has been way over used, and is desensitizing people to the idea. I think that is more damaging to the cause of ending racism. Don't call someone a racist if you don't have concrete evidence, or you are doing a disservice to the cause of ending it.
PS. Sorry Fenway, I let my hate for the Red Sox cloud my sarcasm meter.
