Was watching the Accenture match play this afternoon and led me to think about this.
Why in match play golf if you win the last hole do you HAVE to go first?
I understand it's an advantage IF you stripe one down the middle and put the pressure on your opponent. BUT if you hit a poor shot say O.B. or in the water it can give the hole to your opponent, as they can play proper strategy to take away making worse than a bogey. Which would lead me to believe it's an advantage to go second.
Particularly on par 3's when sometimes you are in between clubs. I know you can't touch your opponents bag, but a lot of times you know what he's hitting and you might be able to sneak a peak if he's not draping a towel over them. Also, you get to see his ball react to the wind and such. As well as if he sticks one then you can go pin hunting w/ no fear and if he plugs one in the bunker you can play to the fat part of the green to try and make a 3.
It should be to your advantage having won the last hole and I think you should have the option of playing 1st or 2nd if it is your honor in match play.
Also, in most sports you CHOOSE to go 2nd. IE Hockey shootout, NCAA Football OT, and in baseball you have "last licks" so I think I'm right in thinking you would want to see what your opponent does first and then react to that. -
false, for the most part at least for me i always wanted to go first apply the pressure pure it down the middle everytime make your oppenent work. For example Tiger was hitting 3woods/2irons off a lot of tees against someone (I forget who, it was in match play) so that he would always be hitting into greens first. I like to always putt first as well unless i will b gettin some sort of read off their putt. By putting first it always gave me a clear head i guess i wasn't thinking shit if i miss this i go back to 2 down rather lets drop this shit and take control. In match play for the most part u should always b playing the golf course and taking it one shot at a time obviously there r expections to the rule (play safe when oppenent is screwed) glgl ramble ramble

I'm not saying it's always best to go 2nd, but I think you should have the option of going 2nd.

You always want to go first to put the pressure on them. Moe is right, you do play the golf course but you play off what your opponent does mainly in match play. It's not even close to Stroke play obviously. I guess compare it like a cash game to a sit an go.
All your other points are irrelevant. Pro's or even good players rarely need to see what other players are hitting on par 3's. Rarely are they going OB. They might miss the fairway but that isn't going to change their mindset on what to hit off the tee.
The joy of match play is you can go for sucker pins. You can try to carry the water from 280 into a par 5. You can do all those things because you're only losing a hole if you don't pull it off, you're not going to card a double or triple. The whole point is to put pressure on them and if you're going second the whole day, that's not happening.
There are times you want to go second but that's the strategy you have to put into play in match play. That's why it's so great. -
PGA Tour makes it's own rules. They could implement it if they wanted. Obv it goes against tradition of the game so they probably never would.

But it's like the no putting after holing out rule on the PGA TOUR. If I have to explain to one more a-hole that wants to penalize me for taking a practice stroke after holing out in another State AM qualifier I'm going to throw my Odyssey into his forehead. Every time I have to explain the PGA Tour makes their own rules that's why they can't putt after. -
In stroke play playoffs on the PGA Tour they do a coin flip or draw a number out of a hat all the time. In the match play low score on the previous hole goes first. Exactly correct about the practice putting rule:
7-2. During Round A player must not make a practice stroke during play of a hole. Between the play of two holes, a player must not make a practice stroke, except that he may practice putting or chipping on or near: (a) the putting green of the hole last played, (b) any practice putting green, or (c) the teeing ground of the next hole to be played in the round, provided a practice stroke is not made from a hazard and does not unduly delay play (Rule 6-7). Strokes made in continuing the play of a hole, the result of which has been decided, are not practice strokes. -
sure you can pratice putting as long as there is no local rule or turny comit rule.

It's a gentleman's game.
