My son is almost 15 months old and I want to start him ice skating. I went to a couple play-it-again sports and they didnt have any small skates. I did some research and came across these Bauer lil champ skates. They are a beginner skate, obv, and about 1/2 the price of a normal hockey skate. They also have a strap/latch thing instead of laces which is super nice considering my son is a spaz. I was just curious if any other parents out there have these for their kids. One website they are sold at says they can not be sharpened, which shouldnt be a huge deal since I sincerely doubt he will work them hard enough to dull them before he grows out of them. Mostly just wondering how satisfied parents were with them. Theyre only $25 so no biggie, but if theyre just big piles of shit I would rather just drop $50 on normal hockey skates and just get them a lil bigger and stuff em with socks.
Anyone with some user knowlege of the skates out there? Heres a pic of the skates

If your just trying to teach him how to skate, get hockey skates. If your trying to teach how to play hockey, get him hockey skates.
My reasoning for my answer is that ankles on kids are weak and hockey skates will better support his ankles to avoid that bowing out thing. Almost all skates can be baked(whether they specify this or not) and properly doing this will help the break in period greatly. This will help with the blisters and the "I dont want to do this anymore" from him.
If you do decide to get hockey skates, Pm me and ill give you instructions on baking them.
Start him playing hockey early, make him the best and profit. -
get regular hockey skates and bake them so they fit his feet, learning to skate with sore feet is -ev...here is the way I did mine and they turn out perfect...... pre-heat the oven at 175, then TURN THE OVEN OFF, put the skates on a towel on a baking tray, then put them in for 5-7 minutes. They should be hot to the touch but not burning hot. Lace them up as tight as possible, but don't pull the laces upward, pull outward (you can rip the skates when they're hot). Leave them on for 10 minutes, then don't skate on them for 24 hours. gl

My system is similar to Gamblers, one thing i would suggest as well is this:
Get him ultra thin dress socks, dip his feet in warm salt water before putting the skates on. This will replicate sweat and help break the materials in.
Also, try not to lay the skates flat. Take out all racks in the oven except the bottom one. Put a towel on the rake and fit the blades in between the grates on the rack so the skates are standing up, perpendicular to the oven rack. This will ensure proper heat dist. and will reduce the chance of any melting on the boot. -
just wanted to say I'm jealous that you're starting your kid so young. i was a skater, but never set foot on the ice until i was almost 8. I can't imagine how ridiculous I would have been if I started when I was a toddler-that's so sick. Hope you have deep pockets, such an expensive sport!!!!
