In a hand with this guy and he turns to the dealer on the flop and asks what the action was preflop, if I open limped or limped behind. Is that cool? seems to me that if he's not paying attention its on him... didn't make a difference in this hand I was just curious what general information if any she could have (should have) given.

I'd be kind of annoyed. I don't think the dealer should be giving players information about the hand at all, aside from clarifying the action on that betting round.

Not right at all. The dealer is there to deal the cards and and make sure the pot is correct. In most casinos they cant even tell you the size of the pot all they can do is spread it so you can get a general idea. They should not be giving any information on how the hand played out. I mean after the hand is over I suppose he could say how it went pre but I still would be mad. No more tips for that dealer IMO

Dealer shouldn't say anything in a situation like that.

It's "etiquette" btw.
Reason: Just FYI -
dealer shouldn't be saying anything back to the guy... once in a while i come across a dealer that gives out info and will confirm that someone limped or checked on other streets and such. definitely not cool, but it happens too often

I regularly play at the Harrah's in Kansas City. One day I was playing in a pot where many of the bigger denomination chips had been pushed underneath the majority of the pot. I asked the dealer if he would spread the pot out so that I could count the chips and he informed me that he could not touch the pot further. He stated that he could, however, restate all the action on each street and I could do the math in my head. I went ahead and counted the pot myself based on recalling the action, but I thought that was really odd and asked him after the hand why he could tell me all that info, but not just spread the damn pot. He said that they are required to be able to recite the action to the hearing or sight impaired or for other accommodation for disabilities and that they are required to provide this same information to all players regardless of disability so as not to discriminate for or against a player based on their actual or perceived disability. Seems like a decent reason . . . gotta love what lawyers have done for the world, eh
I think its a little silly to allow a player to get help (its help, because if you don't pay attention, then this information about betting lines is quite valuable), but since its available to all players equally, I guess its okay. -
Here's the answer to the counting of the pot. I can't find anything in these rules though about the dealer spreading the pot, but I assume it depends on the casino's "house rules".

Rule #43 from the TDA Rules:
Pot Size & Pot-Limit Bets. Players are entitled to be informed of the pot size in pot-limit games only. Dealers will not count the pot in limit & no-limit. Declaring “I bet the pot” is not a valid bet in no-limit but it does bind a player to making a bet of a valid amount. -
I believe the correct answer/ruling is that the dealer is allowed to answer questions relating to the action on the current street (who raised it?) but not on previous streets.
