So what do you guys look for first when looking for tells. Is there something that has been generally reliable over the years for you guys?
Obviously the strong when weak and weak when strong is a given but what else have you all noticed?
After reading that Harrington relies heavily on hands, more so than anything else, I have picked up a lot of information on the presentation of chips when betting. The way players will put their chips in the pot, often subconsciously, can give away some information regarding their hands.
I've also gotten into the habit of looking to my left before I act. A lot of players will give away their action before it even gets to them. This helps make a lot of my decisions much easier.
I haven't gotten the chance to look into caro's book. Has anyone found anything in there, or elsewhere, that has helped them significantly? -
when a girl with large breasts squeezes them in your direction its a case of trying to distract you from the hand and get you to fold
-
Caro's book is very good. He gets a little too specific in trying to assign a dollar amount or percentage of how often each tell is right against players of various abilities, but if you just use it as things to watch for at the poker table, it is great. I highly recommend it.

depending on your position and how your opponent is sitting you can detect foot pattering. That is a sign of nervousness and they dont want you calling. Make sure it isnt an old person bc they shake anyways
-
the young kid who has shades, card protector and a hoodie usually does not know what the hell they are doing.
-
players that when they are strong start talking more to u asking you questions then they just say fuck it i am all in lol, those same players that sit completely still and silent when bluffing lol,
-
This. Also watch peoples eyes and see if when a card comes they look down at there chips.
-
I have definitely noticed this. Either reaching for chips, or looking at their hand and doing something a little different than normal. Or looking at their hand and showing you with their body langauge they are going to fold. I had a guy who would look at his hand right as he got it. If he was going to play, he would put a chip on it, if he was going to fold, he would just keep it their. Makes it easier if you can look back and see a guy or two will fold. This is a lot in 1/2 games though, probably doesn't help as much the higher you get.

I do this a lot, not because of being nervous or as a tell. I have slight add and just have to be constantly doing something, very hard to just sit still. Or it could be too much red bull. Also a nervous tell is very polarized as being a complete bluff or the stone nuts. You have to know the player's betting patterns to decipher which is more likely.

My favorite is the "freeze". Someone bets big on the river, and they are waiting for the other guy to fold or call. Guy reaches for chips or looks like he's going to decide to call and they freeze. stop chewing gum, stop tapping foot, stop tapping their fingers, whatever. It's also one of the easiest fake tells to broadcast though.

Lots of good stuff. I'm going to look into navarro, i had never heard of him previously. A lot of these I will have to keep my eyes out for.
I thought of another one that usually holds true, but sort of aligns with the acting strong when weak theme. Often times when I am going to bet, players will start to reach for their chips as if they are planning on calling, before I even determine an amount. Almost trying to scare you away from betting large as if they are definitely calling, but then instamuck. -
Get both of Navarro's books. The most famous is "Reap'Em and Reap" which is specifically about poker, but "What Every Body Is Saying" is also an amazing book about behavior and will help you understand why people do what they do.
-
For those of you who have read both caro's book and read'em and reap which would you consider the better value.
Does navarro bring a different aspect to reads or what? As far as i've heard up until now caro is pretty much the king of tells. -
Shoulders/posture is a big one.. especially post flop. Tense can mean theyre waiting for a card or uncertain whether to carry on a bluff, loose and relaxed could mean they're totally comfortable with their hand. Totally slouched and defeated can mean they're giving up. Certainly not 100% reliable but some players are fully aware of facial tells and not thinking about body/posture
-
I would consider Navarro's better. Caro presents specific tells. Navarro presents a few specific tells and explains why. Basically you can memorize a list of specific tells from Caro's book, or what overall behavior to look for in Navarro's...and a few specific tells.
