The wife and her sisters are taking their mother out of town for the weekend so I'm free to make my first trip to Ocala Poker and Jai Lai.
I look at the home page and there's a special Mother's Day tournament for Sunday advertised. When I click the tournament schedule there's a $100 Deep Stack tourney on Saturday and no tourneys scheduled for Sundays.
I figured I better call and double check. A nice lady named Carol answered. She confirmed that, yes, a Mother's Day tournament is scheduled on Sunday. I asked about the blind structure for the Saturday tournament and she said, "Oh, we haven't had a Saturday tournament for a couple of months. We quit doing those when we started our high hand promotion." She confirmed that there was no tournament for Saturday despite it being listed on the May calendar. When I suggested that they might want to update their Web site she was very pleasant and agreed, "Yeah, our Web site isn't right."
Moral to the story - I'm really glad that I called before driving 45 minutes to a casino for a tournament that wasn't going to be played.
If it's a smaller casino, you might want to call and double check rather than relying on the Web site. Keeping the info/schedule current on the site may not be their priority. -
Could not agree more. You need to call ahead. I was going to go to Coushatta in Louisiana (I work in Houston) for their weekly Saturday $200, just to check it out. 2 hour, 40 minute drive from here. Website calendar says its a go. I call on the way to confirm and they say, "oh, sorry, we haven't been running those since our bbj got so high..." Diverted to Isle of Capri for $2/$5 cash game.

Same thing happened in San Diego going the other way a few weeks back. I like the tourneys at Oceans 11 (I commute between the two cities), and like their Sunday $100. I saw on the website calendar that instead of their regular Sunday tournament, they had a special freeroll for regulars with X amount of points. Dangit, I thought - called anyway, and they said, "oh, sorry, no, that's wrong online. We're having our regular Sunday tournament today."
Moral of the story: always confirm tournament schedules with the B&M casinos before making the drive...

good point.
heres something kind of opposite that happened to me tho.
i called my local card club.. asked about their new daily deepstack tourneys...
i asked if it would be at least an 18 man and they said yes.
i show up and its just me and 1 other customer and 4 employees playing a 6 person tourney... weak -
Same thing for me last year. I called ahead at Greektown to see what they had going on in tournaments. The guy say the wed nite tourny , i think it was 225 buy in , was barely running and sometimes did'nt have enough to run. But he also say the thurs niter for 75 has 60-70 players.
So me and a buddy go on thurs nite. There are 10 players including the two of us. And when I ask how many they had the nite before. The dealer says " 80 it was a great game you shoulda came down ". -
I am heading up to Ocala Poker this weekend man. The High hand promotion brings the donks in full force. I will be there Sunday if you wanna meet up. Also if you know of any home games around town.
