nice article, but i disagree that there is no variance in sports. Of course there is variance in sports, look at basketball - you try to put up the most high % shots you can, but you don't always win, because sometimes variance makes a bad shooting day. This is why they have Best of 5 or Best of 7 series in sports, to even out variance.

marinersheep I hope you feel better after writing this article; since we have never meet my only question who did you write it for "the community or you"? The answer is not going to be obvious to most; I don't want to be the person who kicks the dog when its down, but had you made this post in the forum there would be hundreds of replies... I think you get the understanding.,,

kmil: If a team plays their best, they will always win IMO. By saying that a team can have a poor shooting day, that means they didn't play their best.

Jones: I wrote it for the community and to represent Zona Crew. I wouldn't have written it at all if I didn't feel like it was something that the community could benefit from. Also, articles are commonly discussed and argued over in the poker forum, so I don't quite see your point. I obviously got satisfaction from writing it, but this epiphany is something that's helped me and something that I decided to share with the P5's community. There's no hidden agenda.

Thanks for reading.

I'll be honest...this is exactly what I needed to read after a consecutive week of complete bs and bad beat finishes...appreciate it.

I had to read the sentence with "epiphany" numerous times to make sure I think I was understanding how you were using the word "epiphany=experience"?

Best regards,

Well written and something I think we can all benefit from. Everyone should feel free to stop by Zonacrew.net and contrbute something to a fun/friendly poker community.

great article!!

I just added a collumn in my tracking sheet for 'grade' and i will try to grade myself honestly whenever I play.

thanks for sharing

Wow, Marinersheep that article was so amazing seriously. I, myself went through some horrible variance this month, and this is a great way to battle variance. If i played in A game I shouldnt be mad I lost money and if i played a D game, then I shouldnt be happy I won alot of money. Definately going to start doing the grade thing, it's much better then seeing how much money I am up or down that day.

I will never forget railing (and rooting for) bdubs (one of your boys) in a ps tourney and having you berate me for being a "pathetic" $5 - $10 sng grinder at the time. Oh nevermind...it was before the epiphany obv. so all is forgotten.

-

lol..these articles always come on the heels of a big win...useless..

-

TYTY bdubs. And for the record, this article was written before my "big win". If you think this article is useless, then I'm sorry. I'm trying to offer a different perspective on how to evaluate your daily success to deal with the strain of online tournament poker and its variance. You can take the advice or ignore it, but I feel that it's beneficial to take in. I'm sorry if you find the article useless.

vewry nicce article ty

Perfect article for the monday blues after an awful sunday. I know I played well yesterday, as evidenced by my bustouts. I think it is always good to review your bustout hands (or sometimes what led to them) to see if it was bad play or bad luck that busted u out. Check-out this sequence:

party 300K: QQ < QJ when a scandi lagtard pot committed himself with a stupid overbet 3-bet and called my 4-bet for a pot worth 4X average stack

Full Tilt Sunday Brawl: Out 80th AT< J8 when SB donk-shoved on my BB for a pot worth 1.5X average stack

Bodog 100K: Out 20 from the money coolered 8BB shove from CO with AT into JJ

Sunday Million: Out 100 from the money after 10BB SB donk-shove J8 > 77, knocking me down to <10BBs. Then coolered shoving 99 into QQ.

FTP 750k: The worst way to end an awful night: SB vs BB 4X average pot when a total retard calls my 4-bet with KJ > 77 (he was far far from pot committed after his 3-bet: simply a terrible call).

Would not have played any of those hands any different and feel it was just one of those nights. The point to recognise is that I played every single hand mentioned above in a +EV manner.

This is a good article. I think though, it leads to the next question, how can you effectively grade yourself? Is it even possible (it's great if you talk to other poker players daily, not everyone has friends/aquaitances that have opinions that I can respect in the game).

I think we see it daily in the forums. I am a great player, but I've never won a day in my life because of the damn donkeys making bad calls on me. These players would give themselves A's day an night for their play, even though they are really playng losing poker (and it's a trap anyone can slip into). I don't have the solution, but it's something to think about.

Where's the money???!!!!

Had a bad run this month after being up nicely for the month, (after three horrible months to start 2008) read the article, then went to the tables and got hosed somemore! I'm all for playing A game, but when you make no money doing, what's the point. It's about the money, and long term is a long way off when you are in a hole. 'There is no joy in Mudville today .... Casey has been beaned'

I need one of those remotes in click.

Thanks for the words of wisdom.
