  17. <p>here's a trick when you want to know which word to use: look it up in the dictionary...</p>
    <p>effect: Verb</p>
    <p>to cause (something) to take place: a peace treaty was effected</p>
    <p>affect: Verb</p>
    <p>1. to influence (someone or something): the very difficult conditions continued to affect our performance</p>
    <p>``I let irrational fear affect my decisions and soon I was over-betting my monsters.''</p>
    <p>affect is a synonym for influence, and that's clearly what he means...</p>
