Basically, what I'm wondering is: did I spew my chips too much there? When he called my bet on the turn, I knew I was beaten there (hence I checked). Could I have played that differently? -
You don't really know where you are on the turn. You probably have the best hand, but you're not sure. I recommend either checking the turn and making or making a smaller bet. When you're not sure where you are practice pot control.
-
If you don't bet 2/3 PSB what you think is the best hand on the turn, what are you going to do when you face a PSB on the river. If you always play weak on the turn (checking), and folding to a bet on the river, you will be spewing long term. Your turn bet gets you a show-down on the river, when your hand becomes marginal, more than 50% of the time.
Your show of strength on the turn gave your opponent a chance to make a mistake vs you [7,7], because he doesn't know how strong your hand is. -
I didn't say you should fold the river, but the bets will be smaller on the river if you manipulate the size of the pot on the turn. By betting 2/3 of the pot on the turn effectively all you're doing is creating a bigger pot with a hand you're not sure is good. If you check, or make a smaller bet the river betting will be smaller saving you much more money if you're behind.
