I'm not looking to crush the game, just really want to survive and have a chance to leavve a winner.
I have a basic knowledge of the game, but look down after two hours and am stuck half a buy-in without really getting involved too much.
Usually play tight, get AA of KK cracked and the night goes downhill from there.
Now I realize you can't change someones game in a single post, but if you could off one or two pieces of basic advice to a losing player what would they be?
Stuff like: Only play top 15 hands, don't chase draws, worry more about position than anything, etc.....
I know some of you crush these games playing guys like me, so how about helping out.
Thanks -
Ok, I think the top 15 hands stuff is fine for the first hour or so, but once you've figured out what type of table you're at, you need to start loosening up.
I'd pay attention to pot odds in position. If you have 7-8 suited and there have been 3 limps with you to play on the button, if it's a loose table then you can limp in, or if it's a tight table you can try and raise it up. -
please do not listen to the above poster and ever limp the button unless there is an absolute maniac at the table in the blinds you are trying to trap. raise hands like suited connectors, small pairs, one gappers (also obvious monsters) in position and try to hit flops. by opening your hand range up it will be harder for them to put you on a hand. by folding and folding it is very easy for a good player to toss a hand when you get frisky all of a sudden

I usually play pretty tight and then open up my game at the casino. I can hardly recall playing at a "tight" table where I play (Shreveport). I usually just play a TAG game and come out ahead because the other people are so bad in these games. Another piece of advice: DONT BLUFF!! or pick your spots very carefully and make sure its against a weak/passive player because 80% of them never fold.

What I find works the best is to not post as soon as you sit down and just wait for the blind and watch the table see how it is playing and adjust to it. You want to see who is betting second/third pair, who is chasing, who is giving up there blinds easy and then attack those people. Also listen to the table talk, most of the players will tell you exactly how they play by there "war stories".

Why not limp on the button with suited-connectors? If the table is loose, you're not going to chase them away with a $10 raise, and you've got a cascade of limpers (if the first one calls), an enlarged pot and a great need to hit trips or a big draw on the flop. Why not keep the pot small, let SB and BB enter the pot and then see what the flop brings? Of course, if the take is loose and weak, then you've got to raise.

Debating this for my own purposes. I'm still relatively new to cash games. -
Maybe I am wrong here, but I think you are giving the other players too much credit. I don't think they bother to put you on a hand, they typically can't see past their own cards.

To most of these players, pot odds be damned. I can't tell you how many times I have heard another player say "you can't fold a flush draw just because someone goes all-in". Umm, yea.
This is in WV where there has been poker for less than a year, I am trying to wade through a mine field here. My biggest enemy at the table is the dealer. -
1/2 NL Live is so easy its almost funny. Go read the harrington on cash games books but if your too lazy then try to see as many cheap flops with pairs and suited connectors. Play ace king slow especially in multi way pots. Just look for sets and straights and flushes and stack someone. Its simple really you just need to be patient Implied odds 101 thats the name of the game because people WILL pay you off.

I can make an average of 300 bucks per day playing this strategy putting in like 18 hour sessions. You gotta be patient though sometimes you will have to wait 10 hours to win a big pot...

Find a casino with lots of tourists. Last time I played 1/2NL at Foxwoods there was one shark, one gambler and the rest tourists. Can make easy $800 over 10 hours of play (then I lost $200 on a crazy hand but still left with $600 profit)

GEEEEEEZ, this thread has offered possibly some of the worst advice ever.
Except for reading Harrington and finding a table with tourists. -
Play on Friday or Saturday nights; Sunday nights if it's a holiday weekend. Until you get a feel for actual play, watch how people handle their chips for an indication of how much skill they have.
Use position in combination with lead-outs (limped pots) or C-bets to take down pots on flops. Do not 2 barrel if you have position if you don't have a very strong hand.
Pot odds mean nothing live. You have to "dumb down" your game considerably at the average live table.
The advice about concealed hands is very good. So many people will call down with top pair/modest kicker, waiting to make a huge hand will usually get you paid by at least one player. -
i didnt realize this was 1/2 live, 1/2 live plays like 1 cent 2 cent online. learn who the solid players are and stay away. i always play tight as people call with anything, so in this case limping would be alright in some spots because as you said, people never fold
playing on the weekends is also solid advice. night time is also great on the weekends because there will be a lot of loose drunks
