  1. 1st hand of Main Event you are in BB. Table folds around to SB who moves all in, you look down at KK. What do you do? Saw someone request this on a similar post with AA, so I figured I would post it. Please give reasons either way.

For me I am calling in a heartbeat just like if I had AA. I would only be left with a tough decision with QQ. I know some people would say survival is more important than chip accumulation especially since there is the potential that I am behind. However for me I see it this way. I will eventually need to get all the chips that are in play. It is going to be hard for me to see a situation where an opportunity like this is presented. I am a huge favorite to every hand that he/she could possibly have except for one. I can't realistically put the SB on AA because of a number of factors.
    These factors are:

The only hands 95% of people are going to give a thought to calling with is either AA or KK. There aren't many chances that I am going to wake up with KK in this situation so it doesnt make sense to raise everything because about 99% probably more the SB will only win the blinds.

If the SB puts out a standard raise with AA I am very likely to reraise with a wide range of hands from 1010-AA and A10-AK if not more. In a situation like this the SB could then come back over the top or just smooth call and he has a much better opportunity to take all of my chips.

Final reason is that if the poker gods see it fit for me to be playing in the World Series and on the 1st hand this situation occurs with the SB having AA and me in the BB having KK I also hope they see fit to allow me to suck out, because if I dont suck out I am out of the tourney.

The only way I am laying down KK to an allin raise preflop is if I have an amazing read on the player and the hand has involved a number of raises already. Otherwise there is no way I would lay down KK preflop
  2. Fold...99% chance you're in a race versus AK, or even worse, soooooot dominated!

  3. AK vs KK is a race?
  4. wow...sarcasm meter is off matt?
  5. I don't think anyone goes all in first hand preflop with anything other than AA if they are in small blind and it has been folded around...unless someone bet them to do it before hand as some kind of prop bet......also even in you have AA in the small blind first hand of wsop you probably would not go all in...so I guess w/ KK you could assume they didn't have AA........has there been an allin preflop and a call ever in the first hand of the WSOP main event???? someone look and find out
  6. Is this a mandatory weekly thread?
  7. bi-weekly. next monday we cover QQ to be followed by mid-pairs and 7-9 suited. stay tuned.

  8. If this is the 1st hand of the WSOP why is the SB moving all in with anything less than AA....no brainer fold
  9. What type of read would you have gotten on him by that point if this was the first hand?
  10. Sklansky In TFAP argues that its correct to fold in this situation, and for the most part I agree with him... You dont need to lose ont the first hand unless u have aces before the flop. Obviously that is the conservative argument. The +ev in having double the chips that early on for me does not equate to risking your tournament life on the first hand.
  11. with all of these posts, if i ever make it to the big one i'm going to know how to get past that first hand. In fact, seeing all the problems that this theoretical first hand creates, i may just fold the first one without even looking.

  12. nick, this situation came up in 1st hand of pca and i was prepared for it after seeing various threads like this

i raise utg with kk to 175 at 25/50blinds with 10k chips in front guy in seat 6 goes ai for 10k. I laid them down face up and he showed aa. I was really sure he had AA so I laid it down more for that reason than it not being a good situation with him possibly having AK. If I can put him on AK there then I'm 100% calling. Just because it's first hand of tourney doesn't mean I'm going to give up a 3:1 situation like that. That's just bad poker.
  13. Roothlus makes the exact point here that I think a lot of us are missing. The fact that it is the 1st hand should not matter at all. Unless you are absolutely positive he has AA there is no way to lay this down. If you would call this later in the tournament which I think most everyone would do you also would have to do it the first hand of the tournament. I realize people are going to say the blinds don't warrant it but in my opinion that doesnt matter, you cannot pass up an opportunity like this.

In regards to what type of read I could have on him, most any read would arise only after a raise or two has taken place.
