Looking back at the Hand 1, my push doesn't seem very smart. With my stack size and the blinds where they were, I just didn't need to make that kind of play at that time. My biggest question in Hand 1 is whether or not Hoosier's call is correct there. Hoosier is a good player and claimed that he was +EV there because I had a wide range of pushing hands. Really though, had I pushed with any pair, any ace, any big connectors or one/two gappers, or even a crap hand like K9o, Hoosier would be at best a 60% favorite or in a coin flip situation and at worst dominated by a higher ace or up against a middle pp where he has 3 outs. Plus, I had been playing pretty tight for the previous hour and had shown only premium hands in 2 other pushes I made, so I didn't expect him to put me on a "wide range of pushing hands" there. I remember reading an article by SamENole, where he talked about how to play shortstacked and how one of the biggest mistakes people make is to push with Ax too willingly (you can find the article here: http://www.pocketfives.com/80BFB869-...FB9E9ADED.aspx). Shouldn't it be even worse to call with any old Ax shortstacked? Was he really +EV there?
In Hand 2, my push seems pretty obvious since we're 5 handed and I'm shortstacked. Hoosier again makes the call with an Ax from the BB. If his call in hand 1 was correct, then it's definitely correct here. Obv, he's a big stack and can afford a flip to knock someone out. Seems like the right play all around. No real question on this hand, but if someone thinks this call was wrong too, please speak up. -
I think your pretty spot on with your own analysis. his call is likely +ev on the first hand, since the shove there really more often than not is a hand that he is a favorite with. If you have a hand that is better than his (AA-88) your probably not shoving there. You are making some kind of raise that you dont mind a call. There really isnt a reason to shove here anyway. The risk is not worth the gain. Your chipstack doesnt increase enough to make this a profitable play in the long run.
The second hand is a standard push. -
Hand 1- I cant really see why u got called either, but you have played with this guy before, he may have a good read on you. Pot odds dont dictate the call. If im in Hoosier's spot im looking to open push. If this indeed is a +EV play I would like to have someone explain it to me as well.
Hand 2- you got your money in the with best hand and had to make a move soon. A10 is an automatic push. You just ran into a bigstack who can afford to gamble, nothing you can do there. -
hand 2 - he actually doubled up with a 10 on the river.
hand 1 - i think it's standard call blind vs blind when you overshove like that. you would value raise hands that beat him but your pushing range there is huge.
hand 2 - i think he's making a -eV call here but i think his reasoning is that if he wins, he can use his stack to punish the other stacks and increases his chances of winning -
netfan and spaz are right that with medium/big pp or a big ace, I probably would have raised 3-4xBB there instead of pushing. maybe he took that into consideration, but maybe I overplay a big pp there on occasion as well. I still think it's a -EV call though. K9o is one of the worst hands I could have pushed with there, but he was still only a 58% favorite preflop. There are many hands that I might have overplayed there where Hoos would be in big trouble. Anyone have any math to back up the EV question on that call?
-
hand 1 is certainly not a standard call
-
i don't know if it's standard or not, i think it is based on your shoving range there, which i think is 22-88, any suited K, any Ace, any 2 broadway, and any suited connector or 1 gapper from 6-8 and up. i don't know how to do the numbers, can someone do them?
-
good thing is you recognized ur preflop play was a poor move on hand #1, the overshove, which can be interpreted as compensation for a marginal hand, can be his only logical justification to call and have a chance to double up.
-
Mathmatically speaking you almost have to push the K9 in the first hand, its folded around and its you two on the blinds. J9 is the about the average hand, the blinds are so big that a raise would commit you to calling his reraise allin anyways I dont have a problem with a push in that situation. There is over 1000 chips in the pot that you would be throwing away if you fold because youre afraid he might have a hand when statistically speaking he wont.
In hand two thats an automatic push as already stated by everyone. I think his call of you was ok cause you could easily be pushing with a weaker ace or KQ or something like that. Good news for you.
YOu mentioned several times about how you have been playing recently (tight, loose, etc). Be careful how much faith you put into how you perceive your table image. For all you know this guy could be playing 5 other tables at the same time and wont be paying attention to how you have been playing. Online players in general just arent that perceptive to pick up on small stuff like that. -
Raise to 3x in hand 1. Push is good in second hand.
-
First of all, he doesn't have to push K9. He has 25 BB's, and Hoosier has about 11. I think the push looks way more like, "I want your blinds and I don't want you to call," than a standard raise.
"There is over 1000 chips in the pot that you would be throwing away if you fold because you're afraid he might have a hand when statistically speaking he wont"
As opposed to the 6000 he throws away, about half the time? (given that Hoosier isn't pushing any two...which with 11 bb's, I'm pretty sure he won't be)
