  1. This is more of a general question that arose from an argument me and my brother had discussing a specific hand:
    Absolute Poker 5-10 NL : 9handed
I'm up abt 1700 and have 2700 in front of me- I raise it to $35 early position w/ AA....get cold called by a tricky, aggresive player one to my left with abt 2500 behind, another decent player w/ abt 2200 and the SB with abt 600.
Flop comes 668....I believe you check this flop to see how the hand develops. your only getting action if your crushed and I like keeping the pot small. My brother says you have to fire 80% of the pot here to take it down, and if you get action it is easy to get away from. I didn't want to get raised by a deep stack and be in a spot where he has me crushed (67, 88, etc)..However its a tough fold b/c they could aslo have a medium overpair, 99-JJ.
Whats the right line in this specific hand and more importantly is there a problem with checking 3-way pots with AA on boards to keep the pot small and see how the hand develops?

  2. I think you have to fire out here with a 2/3 to 3/4 pot size bet....if you get cold called, you are prolly looking at either being monstered....or maybe an pair 99-JJ, but i do think that you get repopped pre with 10's on....maybe an 67 or 89 suited would have cold called the $35 pre raise, In firing on the flop, if you get raised, maybe reraise to see where you are in the hand....it's tricky to say what to do not knowing how any of the players play at the table....but i dont think you check it down here.
  3. I generally play aces, kings, queens as fast as possible to get the hand over with...

Couple issues.... You raise 3.5 times the blind preflop from early position and get 3 callers???? Why?? Having you been playing pretty loose?? Apparently there is no respect for you raises..

2nd.... The flop sucks... Not sure if it's suited or not but someone could easily have called preflop with suited connecters... the likelihood of it being 56 or 67 is there... could even have called with pockets 7's or 8's... regardless YOU NEED TO FIND OUT WHERE EVERYONE STANDS NOW.... most people will have missed this flop so it's best to not slow play it with such a board.. If the board had come different maybe checking would be an option to let people trying to catch up and hit a pair.

Make the raise to 3/4 pot... see what happens... but you don't want anymore drawing... not with aces because because they are hard to improve on... most likely if someone has a chaser hand they will lay it down and the real hands will stay.. (boats, overpairs, sets)... then reevaluate on the turn depending on wants come.. put your opponents on a hand... are they acting weak, strong, do they look scared, is someone who generally raises just calling you and why... lots of things to keep in your head to think about for the rest of the hand.

    Good luck.
  4. Assuming it's a rainbow board, I would probably check here. If you bet 2/3 to 3/4 of the pot, you will get hands like KQ, QJ, AJ to fold. Hands like 99, 10s, and JJ will probably give you some action, but there are too many scare cards that could come up that may kill your action. If you check, 99-JJ will probably bet, and you can play it accordingly from there. Checkraising in that situation will give you a lot more information than simply betting out. If someone has 88 or 67, checking will keep the pot smaller, which is what you want IF you are beat. If you are not beat, it will give overcard hands a chance to catch up. You are risking giving a hand like 44 a free card, but I believe checking is the superior play here.
  5. I had been beaten up the game pretty good and had been getting a lot of respect so the callers did surprise me. They also worried me b/c it was 2 other deep stacks who I thought played pretty good. I wasn't suggesting checking to slowplay. I was more on the line of what charplay said that it was a scary flop. Seems like Im only getting called on this flop if Im crushed. Therefore being that it was 4 handed I thought I could check and see how the hand develops. For example, if someone fires the pot and gets called or riased I can easily get away from the hand. No real scare cards can come out so risking a free card isn't too big a threat and I am keeping the pot small. Likewise if I see a bet from a deepstack and folds around I can throw in a checkraise and see where Im at a lot better, if they repop me I can be alomst certain I am beat,
As it turns out I bet $100 on the flop (120 in pot) b/c my brother had just ripped me on chekng the flop w/ AA in a hand I played earlier (where I busted the guy, but if I bet flop I woulda busted him as well). He preached I had to find out where I was at so I bet.. two deep stakcs mucked and SB called. NOw I know I'm beat ..turn goes check check, river he value bets $100 and he gave me two good a price to muck--of course he showed 88's full...
A deep stack said if I dont bet flop he catches str8 on turn. What brings me to my point. He was an aggressive player who I had seen bet 3/4 pot with draws into multi-fields. If I check, and he bets $100, other guy folds, now SB may raise b/c the raiser (me) is still left to act, in which case I can easliy fold, or he at least calls in which case I can still fold. ONly situation I can beat there is someone who is betting/calling an overpair 99-JJ and the other is drawing, too many other situations where I lose. Therefore I think I coulda saved $200 on the hand. Likewise if SB doesnt have 88 and he mucked I coulda checkraised the drawng guy off the hand, b/c I think he checks a monster there.
Anyways, my whole point in my arguement with my brother was that after the flop in a mulit-way NL cash game AA becomes a marginal hand. I don't see a porblem in slowing down and seeing how the hand develops with it. HE says that is way too weak a play, but believe me I am not at all a weak player and do not think check calling is always weak. I was wondering what everyone elses thoughts were. I think there is a lot to be said for bettting out and taking it down, however, I was wondering if slowing down with em might be superior.
Afterall the expression can't be there for no reason,"AA: win a small pot, or lose a big one"(lol)

  6. i completely understand the checking and see what develops, but i think leading and seeing what develops is a better play, 155 in pot, lead for 99ish or somethin near to and see how the hand progresses imo
