  1. I am getting married July 16, 2010. My job alone won't cut it, so I figured why not Poker. I am not looking to do this obviously like BOKU, in a month. But can someone give me an outline on what to start with and when should I move up? Also I don't want to move up to the nosebleeds as I am not as confident high up there. What level should I stop? Any advice woudl be appreciated.
  2. 100r.... Win... Goal accomplished.
  3. WTF is with all these people thinking its easy as pie to turn $xxx into $xx,xxx? If it was that fucking easy EVERYONE would do it. If you need to come on here to ASK us how to do it then you are obviously very far from being able to obtain your magical goal. But please, do try.
  4. Why so bitter? Just asking a question.

grind low limit sng's and some mtt's
hopefully u make some dough playing the sngs and eventually hit a decent score in a mtt to boost ur roll then move up limits a bit
  9. sitngos are dying, its pretty hard to turn 500 into 30k, gl with your quest. I will say some of these posts are ridiculous, you cant just deposit and ask people how to run into 5figures, poker isnt that easy

  10. Have you ever played poker before? Are you good at poker? What games are you good at? MTTs, SNGs, cash? How much are you looking to play?

These are all questions you have to answer before the original question can be answered.
  11. I would like to know why you would spend 30k on a wedding in this ecenomic enviorment? Seems -ev to me. Sorry... couldn't resist.
  12. I wouldnt focus so much on a set amount. $500 to $30,000 is kind of setting yourself up for failure. Just try to be a winning player and progress your game. If you focus on playing good and staying within your limits the money will take care of itself. Not saying your gonna turn $500 into $30,000 but thats a real longshot anyway.
  13. I would say I am average player. Pretty good at the 180 and 45 man SNGS. I am just thinking if I did this the right way. Go up incrementally and go down in stakes when I have to. I study like a fiend, but only have about 800,000 hands in total since 05. Could I eventually stop at say the $16/$24 level and make it just playing those. Remember I have 16 months.

And I agree about the wedding, but my fiance is worth it, and I have a good enough job. But I just want to challenge myself to pay for the whole thing with Poker.

  14. Maybe I should lower the goal to 10K. And if I could do it once...

  15. If you analyze this quest and read between the lines, he obviously is setting himself up for failure so he is broke by the time wedding rolls around and has an excuse not to get married...sounds like cold feet to me...(only kidding)

I'll join you in your quest because I need 30K for my divorce!

Good Luck and may the poker gods be with you
  16. Ok so I figure you have around 450 days to do this. You want to make $29500 in that time so you need to make around $65 dollars a day. With a bankroll of $500 I would only recommend playing the $3 45 mans. Im not really sure what your ROI would be in these games, but you say you are above average so I will say you can maintain an ROI of %10. With all these numbers I would say it would require a lot of games to be played every day unless you can maintain a higher ROI than %10 in the 45 mans.
  17. 16 months at $16 and $24 mtt sngs, i think you can accomplish this if you put in the volume.
  18. PLO flips for rent money imo
  19. Dont get married. The end.

    Agree.

But seriously. To address the original question, how many posts a day do you see where some random player wants to know what games to play so he/she can go pro? This is poket fives!! We're supposed to be top notch players giving top notch advice. We're supposed to be informed players, asking informed questions. Why the fuck do we have so many people on here who think you can just "bankroll manage" and "game-select" your way to big money or being a pro? I mean, I don't care if all the random donkeys want to think that, but as a community of improving players, I would expect better.

It's like saying, "I'm an average athlete, but a little out of shape. I play flag-football on weekends with my co-workers, and I'm planning to play in the NFL next season. What team do you think I should play for?".

Simply choosing different stakes or a different game format is meaningless if you don't have professional caliber skill. I'd be willing to bet that of all the people who ask these types of questions on this forum, less than 1% ever reach the goals they set out. Ask any pro how they got there and they'll tell you, it's 2% bankroll management and game selection, and 98% kicking ass. Almost every pro that I know spends pretty much every spare minute they have turning themselves into a poker machine.

To the OP, if you have 16 months, that might be long enough to become good enough to do this, but the fact that you're even asking a question like this tells me that you probably don't understand what this is going to take. You have a wife, you have a job, you have a wedding to plan. You don't exactly have a ton of time to spend on improving, let alone on playing. If you're serious about making this happen, all you should be thinking about with whatever spare time you have is how to get better. Game selection and bankroll management are the least of your worries in terms of obstacles in your way. Spend every minute you have getting good... then maybe you'll have a shot at this. If your plan is just to find some easy game where you can make 30K without any work, I'm sorry, but your wedding is going to suck.
  21. Hey man gl in your endeavors and it can be done. Honestly, if you played midstakes all year round going as low as the 5 rebuy up to like 109 freezeouts. No need for you to play that high even to get up to 30,000. But, i must say, if you're planning to do this with all MTT cashes and scores, It's gonna be a tough tough haul for you just cus variance in MTTs much higher than you, i, us, we comprehend it to be. But gl

  22. If u need to make 30k ur going to have to run it up to like 60k if u live i u.s. cuz of taxes

you come off like a douchbag

but i actually do agree, way to many people ask to do this, its not something you can wake and say, Im going to win 30k.
  24. 16 months is a long, long way away, and I assume you want to do SNGs. So, with that said, the best thing you can do right now more so than playing is learning the game. Learn how people who consistantly beat SNGs do what they do. Join an instructional website that focuses on SNGs and follow those players methods in your own way. Download an EV calculator and make it your best friend. Learn as much as you possibly can about push/fold as well as bubble play and you will see much better results. As it becomes more and more natural for you to play, you'll learn to be able to multi table. Once you are able to find a comfortable number of games, you will be able to maximize your profits.

But I can't reiterate this enough, learn learn learn how to play beter and better. It amazes me to see decent players playing an amazing number of games when all they really need to do is improve just a few simple parts of their game to become a better player.

Keep in mind that the vast majority of players lose at online poker, and even among those who are good enough to win, most of them are very small winners. 16 months is a long time, but 30k is a huge amount of money to win for someone who hasn't been a consistantly great player. It is possible to acheive this goal, just know going in that it would require a big commitment for you to make it happen.

    Good luck with this.

you forgot to mention that he should win that 100r on a sunday...weave thru the toughest field on the planet...but he'll certainly double his goal....so instead of 30k he'll end up with at least 70k. goal solved in less than 9 hours.
