Live 2/5 game at local casino
Middle position guy raises to 15
Lady on the cutoff calls
I'm on the button look down at A9
suited call
sb an bb folded
flop 3
j
A
check, check to me. I'm not sure if my A is strong so I check to get a free card and possible make 2 pair ( I know I should bet 25 to see where am at but decided to get the free card )
turn is the 9
for my two pair ( I see the flush draw on the board so I decide is time to make a move )
Guy on middle position comes out firing 100 ( I can't get a read of him since he just sat down at the table and this is like his 2nd hand he plays)
Lady at the cutoff calls 100 bet
Now I'm thinking I have 2 pair with diamond flush draw on the board, I have to push, I don't think he has a set of 9's since I already have A9. AJ is possible but I think he just made 2 pair with j9 so I have him beat. The lady to my right I put her on AK/AQ. I think for a second and since I'm getting 3 to 1 on my money I decided to move all in for 160 ( I might still get an A or 9 for a boat so why not)
They both call my all in for 60 more.
turn 4
Guy shows JJ and lady AK
suited and I see all my chips dissapear.
This hand has been hunting me down the whole week and I'm trying to improve my game so I don't make the same mistake again. I know I made a few mistakes like not raising preflop and not making a feeler bet on the flop. The reason I was so passive is because I just wanted to see a flop with some hearts. Everyone checked to me making me think my A was strong then the 9 on the turn sucked me in completely. The lady to my right did not bet the flop with top pair K kicker if she would of bet 25 there I'm sure I'd fold.
Any comments on different ways to play this hand are greatly apprecciated, thanks -
Throw A9 away in a raised pot. Unless you hit your flush or trips with your 9 it is not too good. Even if you hit 2 pair, someone might have had AJ. You are right, you should have bet the flop, the guy with the J's might have smooth called, but if you fire with your A9 and get callers then you know you are done.
I don't think you played it badly, hard to put someone on trips, but would they bring it in for raise w/J9? -
I think it's marvelous that people can always look their opponent in the eye and put them on a hand just a tad bit sh*ttier than their own. The flaw in your logic is that no one fires out 15 with J9. If you're in a big pot, and you're working with pairs (sans draws), you can't call big bets. If you consistently watch NL cash games you'll see the way to make money is being aggressive with your flush draw (and hitting), and hitting sets. You can't call a raise with A9. I really don't like to call a raise with A-anything except AK in a cash game. You're just asking to be outkicked. I would rather have the guy in middle position fire out 35 than check after throwing out a small raise preflop. After all you are playing 2/5 and he only made it 15. That's the equivalent of someone raising to 6 in a 1/2 game. Especially with an AJX flop. When i play 2/5 live, i'll call raises up to 20 with a suited ace, but if i don't hit trips with the lower cards, or my flush draw, i'm gone. You call based on the value of the suit, not on having A9. Like you said , you thought you were behind on the flop. If you're behind, there's no guarantee that hitting again on the turn can let you catch up. Next time you get into a situation like this, remember that you get two more cards the next hand, and you're only 15 bucks into this pot. Almost everyone has a price tag, where they are just unwilling to call. I'm sure you've had hands where you set a limit for how much you will invest to chase your draw, and the person bets 50 bucks more than you decided on. It's almost the same situation. If the mystery of what he had is what kept you in, you can still fold and let the crazy lady with AK donate to the "we wanna see" cause. Good luck at the tables.

Betting the flop won't help him here if the guy with the jakes knows what he's doing. He bets 25 on the flop, the jacks are going to smoothcall or just double his bet. Unless the lady with AK makes a big move and reraises he can't get out. He might call the extra 25 to see if he can catch a card, and then the 9 will seal his fate. Sometimes your only way to avoid paying off a strong hand is by having someone else dumber than you do it.

haven't read any responses, so sorry if this is repeat.
First off, I think that you should have tossed the A9 pre flop if you had no reads on the MP raiser.
That said, since you called, you have to bet the flop to know if your good or not. If you are raised or called, you should be done with the hand.
