Nice article, although the points mentioned are very well known and recognizable, I found that it was well constructed and a nice read overall, putting it all in perspective once again.
Nice job, sir. -
Thanks Davio,
I've found it hard not to repeat myself or concepts that I have read. However I've learned that reading things again often brings a deeper understanding to the original concepts, when we can see them in relation to new knowledge learned in the interval between readings. Sometimes I read a concept from a different source than the original and it is understood on a more complex level simply because it was articulated in a way that jives better with my own subjective taste.
Glad you liked it.

well done nowa...completely get the 'this is the one' mentality. Nice to see it in writing.

yeah I thought I would take that abominable hand to the grave, but I think recognizing the cause of the blowup in hindsight was helpful in getting closer to the problem and hopefully to removing that leak from my game.

Very well written and a pleasure to read.

Great article, I'm in a downswing right now and while reading the article I could recognize several bad things that I've been doing which hopefully I can fix.

Having been trained almost exclusively in cbt over the last few years I'm obviously intrigued by your posts. I've always figured that poker lessons theorectically translate well to a therapeutic environment (metaphorically) but for obvious reasons I would avoid ever doing so. Not to mention most people would not possess enough insight into poker to properly understand what was being taught.
Anyways I'd be interested to hear if you have a background in cbt or just stumbled across wiki stuff. -
northstar,
I did a few sessions of cognitive therapy a couple years ago and the lessons have stayed with me. Though sometimes I have forgotten how to practice them.
I started thinking about it in relation to poker after reading a ton of bad run posts where people were saying the same thing over and over and felt that their thinking was completely symptomatic of cognitive distortion, and that it was obviously contributing to the perpetuation of the run.
Yes I think it's hard then to translate from poker to CBT. But if you can articulate the general concern of any practice in terms that go beyond the specific vocabulary of that practice, almost anything can serve as an illustrative example. I agree though that it is probably best leave poker talk out of your therapy sessions (though I did talk quite a bit about poker with my therapist in those sessions, because it was one of the easiest things to connect as an example of thought error).

The article was good. The title was misleading.
Bad runs aren't a myth. The content on how to deal with them wsa good though. -
great read, ty for the positive contribution to the site!

thanks to everyone for the positive feedback.
I agree that the title was a little off. I just think it's dangerous to start using a bad run as an excuse because the temptation to overuse it to justify continued losses can be very powerful. -
i think the title makes sense b/c their is a "bad run myth," however, not all bad runs are myths. many ppl create their own bad swings and i've definitely seen how perception of the game many times alters outcome.
