Ub 100$ MTT
Blinds 10-20
Guy to my right was very active, 2 guys on my left liked to see flops.
Middle to late position
Cards: AA
guy on right raises to 45
I reraise about 150
both guys on immediate left call, so does initial raiser
Flop 10 8 8
initial raiser drops all in
Do I call or fold???????
I'll let you know how is played it -
call, i think its too big of a bet for someone to make right away with an 8, he would try to do something tricky instead.
-
I would call with AA... I remember skimming through super systems by Doyle Brunson when he was talking about NL hold 'em (I don't read books as a rule). Anyhow, he says something along the lines of "If I have Aces, after the flop I'm going all in. If he happens to crack my aces, god bless him. Any flop can cause you to second guess myself, so I'm moving in no matter what."
I'm not sure how well I quote this, but that's what I got out of it, and use it as a rule in 95% of situations.

I recall reading that the more people that are in the hand, the less likely that AA is going to hold up. You know what I say to that? F it!! Get all your chips in there with the best hand, and if they suck out, or catch trips, find another tournament. If your aces hold up, then look at that pot.

VERY GOOD QUESTION!!!
It's tricky, because you have someone else to act behind you, and while I agree that if someone flopped trips - or a full house - that they would most likely check it, or throw out a value bet. But then again, perhaps this player knows this, and is going all in to mess with you too. Personally, I don't like CALLING an all-in bet unless I'm pretty damn sure I have it. In this case...I would have called and later regretted my decision when he flips over an 8....because my first reaction was "call", but the more I think about it, and if you're right about this guy being loose, I would be much more hesitant to call him versus someone who's a little tighter and doesn't play suited connectors, or A8 after a raise and a reraise....if he has 88, well, you never had a chance :)
How did this particular hand play out, anyways?? Or did you fold it? -
So heres what happend
I called the all in. He turns over J9. Ends up hitting a Q and I'm out.
I seriously considered folding because there was only 600 or so in the pot and his all in was for 2000. But i really felt like I was ahead so I called.
How could I avoid the situation? -
don't avoid the situation....embrace it. This guy allowed you to get in all your chips at a 70% favorite, i'll take that any day.

Just to clear up a little SS misquote by Wein , the book says that if Doyle ever got half of his money in with KK or AA , well the other half was going in on the flop regardless of what fell . Raisng in a trny to 155 does not constitute this thinking - not saying that callin wasn't the right move in this spot ..... just saying that Wein should read instead of skim...... hehe
Seriously , Wein -- read those NL sections , very interesting
GL at the tables all -
therook, I think you need to remove yourself from the result of this hand and think about whether or not your action was correct---which it was. When we get too hung up on results "today," we prevent ourselves from improving our play. Or as one of my favorite quotes from Zen and the Art of Poker goes, "Your job isn't to make money; it is to make good decisions."

Thanks for the responses and advice. If i had to do it all over again I would make my preflop bet probably double what it was.
I need to remember when I get all my money in ahead it's now out of my control, and take it as it comes.
Thanks

I get just as frustrated with people who call raises w/ J9...ridiculous.

Hey Murph , stop hating on my fav hand . I know it has its flaws . But its a hand that I don't mind callin a raise with pre-flop - mainly b/c I rarely run into a situaton where its dominated . ( not a bad hand to go up against AK or AQ )
The main reason I like this hand is b/c of its deception value . Its very hard for someone to put you on the hand so when it does hit , you'll get paid . He'll be thinking "he couldn't of called my raise with a 9 " with a flop of 899 and will get hurt pretty good .
Having said all that , I'm very good at reading situations so I don't play it like its the nuts when I flop a jack , or anything marginal . I might raise the flop bet and see where I stand , but its not like I can't get away from it when I need to.
***** I wouldn't go all in on a paired board looking for my open-ended str8 to hit like this donk did ...... if that helps :)
GL man , and just curious -- you playing in the WSOP this yr? -
So the guy pushed with the open ended on a semi-bluff. I love it when they do that - you should have had all his chips. Nice call.
