This is ridiculous. I can't believe the heat this poor guy is taking for this. Everyone who is bashing gidders for taking the initiative, being enterprising and generally, just helping everyone on this site should shut the F up.
Personally, when I first went to the site, I was surprised that it was free. Hell, fn fantastic. Sign me up. Then, when I saw all the content, I knew this wasn't sustainable w/o fees in the future. SO FN WHAT! And if you didn't see it coming, then you're naive. And if you don't want to pay, then don't. But don't come down on him for making an effort. For improving your 'poker lives' to some extent. Go figure it out for yourself.
Obviously, most of the lazy bitchers that are complaining don't have any clue about the time and energy it takes to put something of that caliber together. But, you'll surely take it for free and expect it to continue. Unreal. What contributions have any of the complainers made? Furthermore, what the F are Gank, NSXT2, Green Plastic and others thinking as well. Charging money for their time and expertise. What is this world coming to? Geez.
Gidders, don't apologize for anything you've done or will do. Personally, I thank you. Also, I thank everyone who's made meaning, informative and thoughtful posts here on P5. I wouldn't be improving without you guys.

Yep, definitely, what he said.

Nicely said, I concur.

At the risk of being labelled a "hater", let me just respond to one point you made. You point out that anyone who didn't see that Gidders would eventually have to charge for all that content is naive. That would necessarily have to include Gidders himself, then. Gidders implies in his post announcing the fee structure that he did not anticipate ever having to charge for the content. It follows then, that Gidders is either naive, or is being disingenuous when he says he never intended to charge for his site. Whether he is the former or the latter is an open question, but it's not unreasonable for some to get the impression that he has in fact been less than forthcoming about his plans for the site.
That said, I believe that it is reasonable for Gidders to ask for compensation for his advice, and I wish him well. -
Steve,
You make some great points in your post. Gidders does not have, nor did he ever have, any duty to provide anything to anybody for free. Those that believe he did are misguided.
Gidders advertised the site as a free site. However, has since chosen to make the site a paying site. I think anyone with half a brain could see this coming a mile away. If Gidders wants to charge for his site, I wish him the best of luck, and I hope he makes a million.
However, if he truly wanted to keep the site free, he has numerous options that would allow him to do so:
1. Seek advertisements to pay for your site; with all your hits im sure many companies would pay to advertise; you’d still probably make a profit and the site would remain free, allowing you to continue to help people for free.
2. put up a netteller donation bucket (or something similar); this would allow those who feel you should be compensated for your site to do so.
3. ditch the site; virtually everything that is available on the site could be available via pocket 5s; you could have links to the videos; your blog could contain the articles; and you could post on the forum the hands of the day, etc
4. perhaps just charge for portions of your site (i.e. the videos) and leave everything else open for free.
These are just some of the tools you have at your disposal if you really wish to continue helping people for free. However, if this is not your intention, that is not a bad thing either. I think the biggest beef here is that originally this was advertised as a free site for the good of the people, and now you cannot afford to keep it free. Obviously this is not true, you have options to keep it free, you have just chosen another route.
GL to you gidders, I hope your business venture goes well; I hope you make a million. -
It is not just the amount of money that he spends in running/hosting the site that costs him. It is his time doing so, when he has to spend time updating, and doing all that type of stuff he is lossing money by not playing poker. I don't understand how one person who in a free market place is getting criticized for trying to make and sell a product. And being a free market place people have the right not to join or to join, and if you want to join just stop spending your money on beer, porn, cigerattes, or hookers for a month and then you could have some free money for education. He might have options to keep it free, but why would he if he could make some money, if he was filthy rich sure keep it free, but otherwise charge the underlings.

Blue makes a very intelligent, and correct post on this thread.

Steve-
I understand your point, but again, WHO CARES? It's his site. He can put whatever he wants into it, or not. Who's place is it for you or me or anyone else to tell him how to run his site? It's irrelevant why he's charging. Irrelevant, not deceitful, immoral or disingenuous, even.
It would be one thing if he charged the first month and then opened it up for free after that. Now that would be something to get pissed over. Not the fact that he changed his mind for whatever reason.
Anyway, as many of the other threads state, this topic is getting way overblown. Let's get back to poker.
