  5. im kinda good? check prof.....i learned poker from some really bad players in college...then i unlearned what they taught me, and the have had only one other poker friendto learn with along the way... my college roomate, whom i shared the learning process with, ...point is ya no one taught me, and no one has ever had a piece of my action......

i think its funny how many accounts at the end of this 2.5k thing are backed too prob.
  6. i think lilholdem learned from bill chen

    ok bad joke =)

  7. i've never had a mentor unless you count PD weeeeeeeeeeee

  8. I learned on my own. I dont know anyone that plays serious poker. So it is possible.
  9. I have never had a mentor...or for that matter anyone really to talk poker with which is pretty sad. Noone i grew up with plays:(. Let me tell ya...learned some expensive lessons that i could have easily avoided if I had someone to point me in the right direction. And I'm sure there are plenty more I'll run into w/o someone to show me the way.
    Why can't i beat 25/50nl??!! sfrigged
  10. I learned how to build a stack by myself and then turn it over to a really good pro only to donk it off for me. Not gonna name any names though

  11. no real mentor.. but i suck soo
  12. i used to pick JJ's garbage for any spare scraps of paper with anything remotely resembling calculations of "implied odds" or "ICM."

unfortunately, my effort was sidetracked somewhat when i started basing my game around what I thought might be a solid foundation, but it ended up being just a tattered copy of one of grandma JJ's imfamously zesty recipes---a zucchini tortellini dish
  13. lol at mine and ill lol at yours.

  14. I learned from Fife19
  15. I'm self taught.
  16. ^^^ lol @ this

apestyles is an instructor at PocketFives Training . To get more of his advice and to watch his training videos, click here.

  17. I don't know if I'd be considered a good player, but I'm starting to feel a lot better about my mtt results considering I've never had help from backers, teachers, people taking over my account, etc.

Here's another question - how many unknown players on this site could have tremendous success if they were backed/taught by someone like JJ?
  18. self tought unless you count books and cardrunners

  19. Maybe I'm reading all this wrong, but ppl seem to be equating (among other practices) getting advice from other ppl as an unfair/unethical/vve practice akin too multiaccounting. wtf. Is that even a legitimate enough of a question to debunk? If you consider yourself a serious player and aren't getting advice then you should rethink how serious you really are. Everyone needs input.
  20. Pretty much self taught.. not good though, very break-even-ish. In fact, I tend to lose to the rake.

I've messaged local big named players that live in my area (DC METRO) and tried to bribe them with free food, drinks, and possibly bitches to teach me how to play MTT's--but it isn't working.

The offer is still on the table.
  21. I don't think anyone argues that it is unethical for one player to back, teach, or give advice to another.
  22. i learned from jus grindin, nvr read a poker book. But i must say and will admit, mike sexton n the wpt opened up my eyes a lil bit.

  23. Self taught? Oh thats right Annette, I remember the pepsi all over the screen thingy..lmao (inside joke with me and her).. lol!!!!
  24. i learned myself and is banking!!!!!!!
  25. I learned on my own, through trial and error, learning my own style. What really helped me when I was starting out is I had a poker buddy (who became one of my good friends) who was at the same skill level I was. We basically learned together, talking about the game every day and going over hands we played and situations we could think of that may come up in the future.

  26. ^^is talkin about JJP SFobv
  27. good thing the title of the post wasn't...

i'm drunk and would like to know if any good players actually learned grammar by themselves and not w/ the help of someone like jj, etc.
  28. Well, since I don't play the levels that annette, sctrojans, etc. play I don't know if anyone would consider me a good player... I've had my share of wins, top 3 finishes, and overall success for my limited playing.

I won my first big tourny in October of 2005 on bodog after starting out there in July of 2005. I had no one to help me get to that point. I read Super System and railed ari and rusostreet frequently and learned by watching.

Later that year in December I met iLLNugWichee on bodog and although I was already a winning player on the site, he pointed out to some flaws he saw in my game and that helped me even more.

Now, does iLLNugWichee pointing out my flaws to me count as "mentor." I don't think so, but I seriously appreciated that he was the first person to ever do that for me. He is still the only person whom I really talk my own hands with at this stage b/c he knows my game better than amlost anyone.

In the mean time though, I have "helped" other young players disect their play and improve as well. Giving back is important in any vocation, poker included.
  29. I wish I had a mentor...LOL self-taught FTW baby...

O yea who's Steve Paul Ambrose, Nenad Medic, Igotskillz, Broodogg Timex, Ch0ppy and Will Ma again? LOL...Waterloo is SUCH a sicko place for poker...
  30. I still don't understand why you would want to freely 'give back' to a community that will eventually cut your profits down to due increased experience.

    Let the donks be donks.
