Does anybody else do this? I seem to keep succumbing to the same type of mistake over and over again, even though I know better and this mistake has cost me in many tournaments.
I'm a low-limit MTT guy, I know I'm not Phil Ivey and I know I still have a lot to learn...but it's very frustrating when I go on break, tell myself "don't do X, don't do X, don't do X", then come right back and do EXACTLY the thing I've just been telling myself not to do. It gets me down on myself and makes me not want to play.
I just want to know, does anybody else have some particular bugaboo that you keep repeating, that you feel like you should have had pounded out of you by now, but that you keep repeating anyway? If so, how do you deal with it? If you used to have such a glitch, but got past it, how did you do that as well?
It's like, I play fine (for me) for 3-4 hours, get pretty deep in a tourney, then it's like my brain just vanishes for one hand, I make this blunder, and it's gg me and out the door...but I keep repeating the same mistake. I'm a pretty smart guy and I normally learn from my mistakes, but this one I just can't seem to get pounded out of my head.
Help me, pocketfivers. Any advice/suggestions/commiseration is welcome!
Thanks,

LOL, if I had the scores you have I think I'd have trouble heeding that self-advice too!

I've seen at least a few posts similar to this and still don't understand why its so hard. When I spot a leak of mine I correct it. You've already done the hard part of finding the leak, now just recognize when you're in a spot where you make the bad decision and do the right thing. Self-discipline is key to success in poker.

the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.... maybe, just maybe?

Yes, I know exactly what you're going through. I have a habit of getting deep and since I'm naturally nitty, I start drinking to loosen up my game a bit. Naturally, as I get closer to the final table, I start trying to be way too aggro and shove my stack around a lot. I've busted just before the final table 3 times this week... yeah.

We all have times at the table when we know what the best move is, but for some reason we don't do it. Being able to analyze the situation in the heat of the moment is kind of an overlooked skill, and it's definitely something you can get better at. Here's a few things that I sometimes do:
1. I always take about 2 seconds before acting. Make the decision, count to 2, act. It eliminates clicking tells, and I find it helps me to stay focused.
2. Take your hand off the mouse when you're in a hand. This forces you to take an extra moment, and you won't insta-click your way into something dumb. That moment as you reach for the mouse is a time where you can sometimes put on the brakes. I've gone as far as to hold my hands behind the chair. Whatever works.
3. Breath and go slowly. Sounds dumb, but it works. Try to maintain even breathing, and just deliberately make your plays. All you have to do is just make one decision at a time. Figure out what the best play is, and then make it... sounds so simple. -
I made a post like this the other day, saying discipline is one of the hardest things i deal with while playing poker. All i got was flamed.
Either way..just try try try your best not to do it when you know it's a mistake, and it'll cost you a lot of chips.
I really concentrated on that, and couple days ago i FT'ed a $2.20 MTT. I went out in 8th, but coming 8th out of 4500 runners was a really big confidence booster.
Good luck in the future! -
Just to add. Very good advice lind.
