  1. Perhaps you guys could give me some advice. Or flame me. Either way...

I'm trying to avoid getting nailed by a set or a weird two pair. I understand that it happens and usually I'm ahead and all that, but right now I seem to be the donk that everyone loves because I'm paying off sets with TPTK. Let me lay out some hypothetical examples here involving made up events that never happened with fake people on a site that doesn't exist.

Let's say I have an average player (not too tight, not too loose, etc...) or maybe one that I don't have a read on yet. We'll call him Evildude. I've got AKs.

    Scenario 1:
Evildude raises EP to 3x, I reraise to 9x, a bunch of folds, Evildude calls. Flop is K 7 2 rainbow. Evildude bets 1/2 pot. I imagine the right move here is to reraise (yes?). Let's say I do and he repops me. What's the right move now?

    Scenario 2:
Similar but with Evildude behind me. I raise 3x EP, Evildude makes it 9x, I call (yes?). Flop is K 7 2 rainbow, I bet 1/2 to 2/3 pot, Evildude reraises me. What now?

    Scenario 3:
I make it 3x, Evildude smooth calls preflop, everyone else folds. Flop is K 7 2 rainbow, I bet out and Evildude raises. What now?

I know I'm going to get nailed with the set sometimes with nothing I can do about it, that's fine. I'm just trying to limit the donkness on my part. Perhaps there are some times when I can avoid it. I should mention that I play at the low cash game levels where the competition is pretty varied and seems to be rather passive.

    Thanks for your help guys.
  2. stack/blind sizes and table images for your scenarios would help you get a decent answer maybe, but most people stack off with AK in that spot unless you're pretty deep-stacked.
  3. This one's easy: run better!

  4. i have a simlilar problem in low level cash games and from my experice i'd say don't play big pots with top pair (top kicker or otherwise) - ther are better spots to get the money in especially at a table or morons. One pair isn't a very strong hand in holdem.
  5. Yeah, unless you have alot of chips its definately incorrect to fold AK in really any of these spots, unless you have a very very solid read on the guy. When you are deep stacked though people wont put all their chips in with KQ on boards like that, and bluffs for 100x the bb are very rare. You can just try to disect the hand and cut ur losses if someone shows enough resistance in pots like this when ur deep stacked.

  6. Sweet. Good advice (especially about running better. I should really do that).

You're right about the deep stacks, I could probably wiggle out of it with 150-200x the bb or whatever. It's kind of tough when just sitting down with 100x the bb in a cash game with this. At this level it doesn't seem uncommon to encounter people making this play with QQ or K10 sometimes. That makes it tough to lay down.
