Due to some financial circumstances, I have found myself being backed by a prominent member of the poker community.
I've played probably 5-6 tournaments, and so far his ROI has been 0%. The beats I have taken have been pretty brutal, and I've sent him HH where I've been ahead everytime I've busted...
I think my backer is very confident in my play, but let's be honest, money and numbers speak. He's a poker player, so I'm sure he understands the long intervals in between big scores, but when I should I begin to worry about my backing agreement turning sour? This is basically my only way to play poker right now and I don't want this opportunity to pass me by. -
I've had basically no experience with backing situations, but these are my thoughts. First of all, there needs to be some level of comfort between the two of you before you enter into a situation like this. If you've only played 6 tournaments, and you are already worrying about whether or not he's going to drop you like a bad habit, you probably aren't very comfortable with the situation yet. Being a poker player, he clearly understands that you aren't necessarily going to put up immediate resuls, and it's also apparent that he is confident in your game. Talk to him to reassure yourself that you are comfortable with the arrangement, because if you keep worrying, your tourney game will probably suffer, and it might just be a self-fulfilling prophecy.

I would say sending him bad beat hand histories is one of the worst things you can do. He knows these things will happen, you don't need him to sympathize with you for how unlucky you got or to feel good about you making the right play and getting unlucky. What you do need is for him to have confidence in your play, and if he starts to see you as someone who gets overly worked up over bad beats, he might start to lose confidence.....just a thought. Just tell him you busted out before the money every time you do. He knows it takes a while between cashes and that the big one is always just around the corner.

also..... i gotta disagree w/ you adam...i like to see the bad beat HH's...lets me know he's getting in ahead and playing good poker....and he has sent me some real sick ones...like 77 against qk on K72 flop and stuff like that -
That trip 7's running into the runner runner flush was SICCCCCCCCCCCCCC
GG Wein.
Id back you if someone else didnt. You play well.
Remember to play 'YOUR' game. Even if its someone elses money dont let that change the methods that have made you succesfull in the past.

Dearest Wein,
Please do not worry about the bad beats. gbmantis understands more than anyone what its like to be way ahead and lose on the last day eerrrrr I mean river. You see Mr. Mantis had me dominated in Fantasy Hoops with one day left. I then came back on Sunday(there are very few games) and took him for the week 5-4. This is all after he made a post on the fantasy BBall board about how he owns me. GG Mantis
Wein I helped him understand for you since he just sucks out on people in poker all day :)
