Tim Lock -
i'd have to say a mix of both. you have trips so only 2 hands can really beat you (a better ace, or 10-10. I think you gotta bet out to see where you stand with your weak kicker. These hands seem so nice and you want to get paid off so hard with a hand like this, but i feel like if you bet flop, kk calls, and you bet turn, he probably folds. It is ALWAYS better to win small pot than lose a big one.
on the contrary, this is a sng, so there it depends on your philosophy. some people tend to gamble more in sngs because if you bust and you are good, you can always get right back into a new one. others like to grind to make $$. if you know which one of the 2 you are, it should explain more how to play this sort of situation.
All in all, people have trouble folding kk on a double ace board, and you probably end up with same results. tough to lose to runners -
lets look at your opponents play first. The raise with KK to only $25 pre is horrible. Its costing them only fifteen more to call, its just a 2.5x raise, and if one calls the rest have to call because of the pot odds. A hand like 78 suited would be golden here for one of them. The flop comes with the two aces and he decreases his bet from his preflop bet and is out of position. Then when it comes to the turn, he plays his kk like he has quad aces and cant be beat.
now your play. i dont like the a5 call preflop. I never play ace rag. I always want to play hands with potential and this hand has none. I like to also always come in with a raise preflop to disguise my hands. They dont know whether you have aa kk jj 78 or 54. This gets the table thinking that you have a extremely loose image. You will lose money because you will be raising with hands like suited connectors and not hit but thats ok. you want to seem real loose. Then when your hands hit you will get paid, but a5 is not a hand i like to play for the following reasons.
if you would limp with a5 im sure someone would limp with a6 or a7, etc..... You can end up losing a nice amount of chips calling small to mediums sized bets because you cant get too aggressive when your ace hits and you have a weak kicker.
min raises cause you a lot of trouble because you cant fold to a min raise pre. Then you have no idea where you are at.
all in all i just dont think that playing these hands, especailly in a multiway pot are profitable.
Ok, back to your play, i kind of deviated. So you call with your a5 with a million others in the pot. You hit your trip aces on the flop and the aggressor pre bets out $20. you are last to act, see a flat call in front of you, but then JUST call.
WHY?
What does just calling here do for you? You gain no knowledge of your other players hand. You should definately raise here. There are many reasons why:
1. you could let your opponent catch up by giving him a cheap look at the turn. he could have kq, med to big pocket pair. the turn could bring him a boat or a straight.
2. You need information on his hand. how strong is he? raising will give you info.
Now comes the gurning bringing a q, a flush draw and a straight draw. Neither of the latter two are probably made yet but he could be holding QQ giving him a boat. He bets out 40 increasing his bet. the guy behind him flat calls again, hmmmmm.. and you decide to make your move on the pot. But why now? Im guessing that you see the flush draw and str8 draw and want to protect. The aggressor pushes and the other folds. Then you call. Very tough call to make. He could have a better ace, a boat, who knows. You made no effort to help yourself in making a tough decision.
You call. I guess odds wise, this is a call here, maybe no though. Im not sure of your read on the guy and the range of hands that you put your opponent on but you made it very difficult on yourself
EDIT* i thought this was for a cash game. so take my info as if it were a cash game lol because i dont feel like retyping. the only issue i stress is a5 is crap multiway. You shouldnt even think about playing it in the first level
