  1. I don't think this gets talked about in this kind of detail but I'll try to explain things as simple as possible . I will come up with a reasonable bankroll requirement for various roi's and your personal risk tolerence for entering the tournament .

    In cash games , it's relatively straight forward to derive one's s.d as long as we have 30 cash game sessions . For mtt's , this is not simply done since there are many possible outcomes for your session . You may place in first place , 2nd place , 3rd place , or even ootm . We cannot use the normal distribution here since we have more than two possible choices and it's not so easily done . We can however make further assumptions about our win rate and our probability distribution for placing in position 1,2,3,...i . The number of standard deviations for a typical 180 man tourney with an roi of around 50% is around 6 buy-ins . If we accept a personal risk tolerence of 1% , then we can use the following formula :

    B=(s.d)^2/(2*roi) *lnr where r is your risk tolerence .

    B=6^2/(2*0.5)*ln0.01
    B~165 buyins .

    So if you plan on playing the 180 man tournament and you can settle for a risk tolerence of 1% , then you can safely play using about 165 buyins .

    If you prefer a more conervative risk tolerence of , let's say 0.5%, then your bankroll requirement , would be about 190 buyins .

    If your a little better than average , then your standard devation may be as low as 5 buyins . Let's say your roi is 15% .

    B=5^2/(2*0.15)*ln0.01
    B~ 383 buyins .

    This is a substantial difference than the example I provided above . If your roi is 15% and your standard deviation is 5 buy ins , then you need more than twice as many buyins as my previous example where I've chosen a risk tolerence of 1% .

    Hope you enjoyed this :)
  2. insightful! thanks
  3. Interesting.. But if you experience a 165 buy in downswing at 180's you should immediatly quit poker. Being completely nitty you should have maybe 70 buy ins. If you have a 70 buy in downswing you have to stop playing.. Thats just my opinion from playing them..

  4. Yes , that would be pretty bad luck , wouldn't it ?

  5. I dont think 70 buy in downswing is bad luck. IVe had 43 buy in downswings that I consider horrendous luck..
  6. If you experience a 165 buyin downswing then you may need to reconsider if you're a winning player . Many people grossly over estimate their true win rate which is why so many players have poor bankroll management .

    Also , your willingness to move up or down if you experience some crazy swings will change your requirements , too .
