Now I know free poker sucks for must of us, but my buddy is opening a bar in St. Louis soon and
wants to possibly start a bar poker league(and wants me to run or help). I really don't know the laws but it seems to bring in patrons in the St Louis area. If anybody has any helpful info on any laws tied into this and/or if anybody plays or has played in these leagues want was good and bad about it. Thx. -
I live in st. louis as well. I'd like to help out as well if need be. I used to play a couple nights a week in the area. Not real sure on how they make money, but the laws of it are simple...no buy ins. I have seen certain tournaments that paid out an American Express gift certificate and such though. Keep me informed on whats and if you need any help.

look into denverpokertour.com. they have free bar poker all over the place in denver and other city's all over colorado. but it go's something like if you win you get 1000 chips into a final round at the end of the month.. if you win this you go to a large mtt held every 6? months or something, and it's pay out is a seat to the wsop and some other things. I"m unsure of all the details but thought looking into what is going on out here may help if they had anything like this at all in your town. But in all honesty I know it will draw a crowd no matterr what but just have drink specials. give out gift certificates to that bar or what ever as prizes. people will still come. hell they go for bar trivia. this rocks bar trivia. hey...i live in stl and i have a buddy that lives in soulard...i also am familiar with the people that run a company called nationwide poker tour (mostly at hotshots and bars like that) so i could give you thier info or you could just go and talk to them yourself...i know when they play they pay out points that go towards bigger tourneys that pay bar tabsand prizes such as that...anyway good luck to you and your buddy and post your opening date and i will see you there.

if youre serious about running the bar properly and running the league for any length of time spend the 200 bucks on advice from a real attorney there in st. louis
dont get legal advice that puts you at risk off a message board -
From my experience with such tournaments basically you can charge a cover to "sit" in a certain area of the bar (poker tables). As far as rebuys, if an individual buys X amont of beer or food they get X amount extra chips. Now cash prizes are a no no, but visa prepaid credit cards are just as effective.
