Hi everybody.
I guess i am starting this thread out of curiosity as to the big decisions us poker players have to make regarding the direction we want to go in for the future. I am currently at a crossroads where i feel i need to make a fairly concrete decision - do i want to be a MTT professional or play cash games to make the bulk of my living? I'm especially interested to hear what fellow professional players think on the subject....so here goes.
If you will humour me and think back to the time where we all had a relatively innocent, battle-scar free, lets take on the world and crush souls at the table mindset (i know i know we're all hardened degens now but it's worth a shot right :) ?) . The reason i'm asking this specifically is i'm interested to hear peoples thoughts and how they have evolved from then to now...in terms of setting goals for ourselves and what we want to achieve from poker. Like how have your goals/aspirations changed from when you started playing the game?
When i first started playing poker i played almost exclusively in cash games. I consider myself lucky in that i have always been able to make money consistently at cash tables, and be able to play the game that i love without any major worries. Then came my introduction to MTTs and i was hooked. The buzz of trying to wade through those epic fields....the feeling of achievement when making a deep run in a large event. I'm sure we can all relate. I'm sure we can all also relate to the bad times in MTT's where you can go on prolonged downswings and generally get beaten up.
I'm gonna cut to the chase now and stop waffling on! I guess what i'm really asking is this. Looking to the future are you focused purely on monetary gain? Or are achievements/titles/prestige more important to you? I know that if i go down the cash table route that i can make a steady income. However the thought of just grinding it out at cash tables for years on end does sometimes sadden me a little. So logically the choice would be to focus on cash games. But mentally i can't help being attracted to the goal of trying to better myself in MTTs and achieve something tangible.
So which paths have you guys taken and why? I hope you can forgive me if this post has become somewhat muddled! It's 5am here and i've clearly managed to get all philosophical :) . Best of luck at the tables everybody.
