Anyone got any good reads for PLO (hi) tournaments?
I'm going to start to widen my poker game range and have been getting into more PLO and 7 card stud recently.
I'e only played micro stake cash games just to get a feel and i'm going to start to play more tounaments. But w/o having much of a clue about these games in tournaments I was woundering if anyone has any good articles? -
Hello all, what is the best cash game books out there in your opinions? I have searched long and hard and it seems all the threads on this subject are outdated and old. Was wondering what newer books out there are the best and throw in older ones as well that would work with todays game.

For those of you unfamiliar he's the psychologist who writes books on poker psychology. I had read Your Worst Poker Enemy a couple years ago and was only modestly impressed at best, but against my better judgment recently I bought Poker Winners Are Different. Holy crap what an excellent book.
While one could argue that both books largely tell us stuff we already know (or are supposed to know) one could make the same argument about personal psychology in general. The difference is the first book mentioned is largely negatively focused "You probably do this and this and this and you shouldn't" the second book is positively focused "Great players do this and this and this, you should too"
That and it serves as an excellent reminder of everything we should be thinking, doing, and preparing for at the tables.
Can't recommend it highly enough. -
for a consistent low/midstakes winner looking to take his game to the next level. Seven or so years ago when I got into the game I read all the staples: Super/System I and II, some old Sklansky stuff, and of course Harrington on Hold'em I and II. I found Harrington's books to be most helpful as his style of going over the details of many different scenarios really resonated with me. What I'm looking for now is basically an updated version of a Harrington-style book that takes into account the extreme evolution of the game over the last five years.

What I'm looking for in a book(s):
-Highly detailed hand strategy discussion (especially post-flop)
-Should be a tourney-oriented book (tho any good hand discussion book is ok)
-Preferably written by a successful internet player
-Should be written within the last two years (preferably within the last year) -
I don't read many poker books, just wondering if anyone has read Annie new book " Decide to play good poker " any thoughts on it ????
-
I love that the guy asking about Annie Dukes new books name is ISuckAtPoker

Agree, Kill Everyone is definitely a better book.
Tournament:
1. Harrington on Holdem series- By now a lot of the book is considered common and may no longer be groundbreaking information. For beginners though, it is a must read. Some of the strategies discussed in here were revolutionary at the time. Also, he has an ability to make it easy to understand for beginners.
2. Kill Everyone- For todays Online Games this is very helpful, IMO. It offers a lot for beginners to intermediate players to learn.
Cash:
1. No Limit Holdem Theory and Practice- A must read for Cash Game Players. It discusses a lot of different techniques and will help all beginners and intermediate players, IMO.
2. Harrington On Cash- Again, Harrington has a way to explain things that makes them simple. There is nothing groundbreaking here, but should help beginners become solid players.
There are lots and lots that I know I didn't mention and the ones above are mainly for beginners. These aren't necessary my favorites, but ones I think should be read by anybody looking to take Poker serious at all. The books above will basically give you a good starting foundation to build on as you continue to develop your game and read other books. -
I just looked this up, $1850, Really? Holy SH*T!! Paperback no less. I am shocked.

I would suggest the best ever poker book is:
"DON'T WASTE HOURS OF YOUR LIFE READING ABOUT POKER BOOKS ON THE POCKET FIVES FORUM"
It's by Wright Ding.
The next best book is:
"NO ONE IS EVER GOING TO TELL YOU HOW TO WIN IN A BOOK"
By Wye Thefuc Shudthey.
Another one is :
"NEVER EVER BLUFF"
by Never Winn Thenn
Titles I would like to see written by someone who knows the score:
"HOLDING YOUR NERVE UNDER IMMENSE PRESSURE"
"BLUFFING ALL-IN WITH YOUR HEART BEATING OUT OF YOUR CHEST"
"RAISING OUT OF POSITION WITH GARBAGE VERY EARLY ON TO GET CONTROL"
"KEEPING COOL WHEN YOU'VE JUST HAD TO FOLD YOUR BIG BLUFF TO A RE-RAISE"
"THE REAL PERCENTAGES OF WINNING A 3000 MAN TOURNEY FROM A WORLD CLASS PLAYER TO AN ORDINARY PLAYER"
Now they really would be titles worth reading. -

Anyone have any advice on what the best nl poker books are out there to buy, because i started playing in january and i feel like i am playing worse now than when i started. -
Hey Guys,
Does anyone know where I can find any poker audiobooks?
Do these exist?
Titles?
Thanks! -
Best 4 books:
Book of Poker Tells - Mike Caro (Excellent for anything live)
Mathmatics of Poker - Chen (Anything you need with the math)
Tournement Poker For Advanced Players - David Sklansky (Great for any tournement you need)
Super System 2 - Doyle Brunson w/others (you will win at other games besides holdem and PLO just becasue of this book)
I play almost exclusively live cash for most of my poker career, so anything with Pyschcology and body language, is extremely useful, I have repeated the same class at my local community college for years. I take the class maybe every 18 months or so to refresh, and the best part is I get to write my papers on poker LOL.
But because I play more live and played before the internet boom you can see my books are more of the "old gaurd" of poker. The best suggestion is read books that mirror your style of play or the exact opposite to get other perspective. -

Nice post. -
Not a huge reader but am going on vacation and would like to bring something to read and try and semi get into reading..
So could anyone recommend me any poker books, gambling books etc.. Not looking for a pure strategy book, but more something on the life of a gambler/poker player..
On a side note, if there are any other books you could recommend, im looking for something entertaining..
Thanks -
didnt read it yet but heard barry greenstein's "ace on the river" is one of the best books and is prolly exactly what ur looking for
-
David Hayano's "Poker Faces." If you can find a copy.
From Google books:
"This anthropological approach to the rewards and problems of poker-playing as a profession distinguishes between the legitimate, independent player, the cheat, and the compulsive bettor"
IIRC this was his anthropology master's thesis that was published in 1983. It studies the old SoCal card rooms before they started playing holdem but focuses entirely on the players themselves, not the play. I guarantee any poker player that reads it will recognize people they regularly play against in the different types of people in the book. -
As to Barrys book.. Trying to find a copy online but it seems they are out of stock..
I am going to research the Poker Faces book..
Thanks and keep em coming!
Mike Matusow: Check-Raising the Devil
Anyone have any reviews on that book? -
yeah, they made the movie '21' about this...but the movie was awful.

one quick story talks about a prop bet between 2 peeps and the bet presented was this guy wanted odds on his money that he can sit at this particular reg. poker table in LV and get all the players at the table to leave without any funny business. So the bookie takes the prop bet giving this guy great odds on the dollar[it was a big bet].T he next day the bookie watches fro far away as the man sits down to play and within like 2 hours 1 by 1 peeps started clearing off the table, lol so the guy wins the bet and the bookie was like wtf did u do to make them leave. The guy shows him his drink and it was some kind of prune juice mix ,that got him too shit his pants and let the smell drive everyone off the table till he won the prop bet i want too say it was like 40k or more the guy won -
Any good poker books to read in the upcoming holiday season? I've read Negreanu's Power holdem and I'm getting Doyles Super System 1 and 2. Any other good ones?
-
i ve read this along time ago and the game has changed ,but are theses books revelevent to the new style at all? do ppl still use M
-
Apart from the standard raises sizes used in the books that have changed now, yes
Fundementals, pots odds, position, hand ranges, M, stack sizes, ABC poker all still relevant and the books will still help a player go from micro to low to mid stakes imo
Upwards than mid stakes you need more than harrington now, but that has been the case for a while -
My freind is looking for a decent tournament strategy book. Something middle of the road, not heavily advanced, but not all beginner either. Also something current, No Mcevoy/Cloutier books.
