<SPAN>In my mind this was a close decision between folding & calling. Does anyone have a reasoned advice here?

This doesn't seem close at all, quite apart from the fact that an initial fold was clearly better play than your raise; with the pot laying 1230 to 780 required for your call, you aren't getting nearly the right price for those hands which dominate yours. Even when you think your opponent may simply be making a move, why toss off 40% of your starting stack on a marginal hand and situation?
-
Way to easy for you to be dominated here. At best you're in a race situation and if you lose you're going to be hurtin. Best case scenario for you is that he has T-T and you're flipping, but he could easily have a higher wheelhouse holding and put you in a bad spot.

If you are going to raise this hand from early position with short stacks behind you, you have to do it with the intent of calling off. If you aren't willing to call the short shove then just fold pre.
And I disagree with being dominated.... The short stack could be shoving any pair, suited connectors or any A. I think you got yourself in this position, now you have to call off. -
This. You have to call, you're getting almost exactly 2-1. The lesson here is that you need to have a plan for each villian (and their respective stacks) left to act behind you.

I would also recommend opening a little less, say 250-275.
