  1. hey all

I'm just wanting to get some more perspective on how you should play a certain hand in the mid stage of MTT. This hand has cme up both live and online MTT.
I've got an M o about 9 and chip stack is just below the avg I get dealt AA in late position a player in early position makes a standard 3x raise preflop. Here you have two options, I elect to call preflop and wait to re raise the CBET, th other option is to re raise pre. Well the flop came out JQ8 two spades only initial raiser and I left now he makes a CBET an I re raise 3x committing about half my chips mabe just over, he moves all in I call as though I feel that I am pot committed. He shows a set of 8's and knocks me out of the tourny. In the online MTT I played this hand the same way and also came up against a set similar circumstances the only diffeence was that i sucked out to hit my a on river to make higher set.
I do realise that this might seem like a basic Q? but just wanting to know how other players play this hand/scenario. Do people think its bad to slow play AA reflop when in position.

    Thanks for your comments

  2. An early position raise shows strength. I don't like to slow play AA. I would reraise pre flop. As a reraise after the flop doesn't get enough money in. 2/3 of the time they miss the flop. And there's no guarentee the cbet it. Nor will they call your raise w/a worse hand often enough. I think the time to slow play AA is short handed 5 or less. When there blinds + antees are big and stacks are small. It is the nuts pre-flop but only a pair after. I like to raise when i'm ahead. But to slow play them I smooth call pre-flop. Then smooth call the cbet(pending on the flop). Then slam them on the turn. W/ an M of 8 i'd much rather get my chips in pre flop. As don't have enough chips to play after the flop.
  3. yeah it seems the play i will be making from now on as a lot of things need to happen to get a cbet and get called on the flop and stilll be ahead. but yeah cheers for the reply

  4. I play AA mid-tourney dependent on how the other players have been playing, since I should have a good read on them by this point.

If they are typically aggressive, I'll either standard 3x raise or limp, and then 3-bet when someone re-raises me.

If they are typically tight, I'll min raise and hope to see a flop against one other person, or raise standard and hope someone else has KK and shoves.

Basically, try to narrow it down to one person with another monster, and be careful if QQx or KKx comes on flop.
  5. In the first hand, when it's raised in front of you, a flat-call of the raise is sub-optimal in my mind, given your low M; reraise all-in and don't get cute, the way some might, with a minimum reraise. Were the money deeper, you could and should flat-call this raise with the biggest pairs some of the time in order to vary your play.
